Asus M4A77TD with Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB problem

Hi All,

 

I recently decided to beef up my system by purchasing some new Corsair Vengeance 2x8 GB DDR3 1600MHz for my aging computer. I looked around and found that my motherboard, the Asus M4A77TD, should be compatible with up to 16GB of DDR3 1600, and I have always had good experiences with Corsair, so I went ahead and bought the ram. Unfortunately I cannot get the computer to post (not even a beep) with even 1 stick of the new ram installed.

 

Looking through the manual I came across, in small type, a warning saying that the motherboard only supports up to 4GB DIMMS (which is not mentioned anywhere on the box or tech spec sheet). I just want to make sure, before trying to send the ram back to amazon, that there is absolutely no way that I can use this ram in my system?

Sure it is....

4 x DIMM, Max. 16GB, DDR3 1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 Hz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

4 slots with a max of 16gigs. 4x4gigs =16gigs. Also if you note that the 1600mhz would be an Overclocked setting. Meaning you would need to overclock your processor to reach 1600mhz.

Sorry to be pedantic, but a cap of 16GB and 4 DIMMS does not necessarily imply a maximum of 4GB per DIMM slot: I could have 2x8=16 or even 1x16=16 if they make it. Without knowing otherwise there is no knowing if the maximum RAM is the sum of the capacities of the DIMM slots or some other hardware limit, perhaps in the memory controller on the motherboard. I'm no stranger to building PCs but I have never come across this particular piece of wisdom before.

Well thats the way it is. Even with the new boards . Pick ANY one and look at the total possible memory and divide by the slots and you can find out the largest memory module you can run. 4ig sticks were max up until the Intel X58 chipset and moved to 8 gig modules once they launched Sandybridge.

 

It's very common knowledge and there is also no such thing as a 16 gig stick.

Well thats the way it is. Even with the new boards . Pick ANY one and look at the total possible memory and divide by the slots and you can find out the largest memory module you can run.

 

And if your no stranger to building PC's you would know this. You would also know there is no such thing as a 16gig stick.

 

Thank you for the information. I have been building my PCs for something like 13 years and have never come across this information. Regarding the 16gb DIMM, my computer is almost 3 years old now, so I have not been paying attention to the market.

Well not quite true there are some 16 Gig modules but they are extremely expensive and very few chipsets will support them. Micron made some 1 Gig X 8 memory IC's a while back but I have not seen anyone using them in a desktop memory module. Have not checked recently but the last time I did to build a 16 Gig module would have to sell for about $3000.00 USD I dont think any of us would be willing to pay that much I know I wouldn't.

OK, I flashed the bios with the latest update and tried again; this time it worked! Both Windows and CPU-Z are reporting 16GB of RAM. I guess the motherboard can support DIMMs larger than 4GB after all.

Your right and all i was getting at is that there would not be anything made for a common desktop.

You got lucky. That board with that chipset is not supposed to be able to use 8 gig modules.
