GS700

I just bought a GS 700. I installed it and have noticed the chirping noise. It's hit or miss, but it does happen regularly... it sounds like a hard drive reading/writing at a higher pitch. Here is a youtbe link of exactly what mine is sounding like:

It appears it is the fan trying to kick on and not being able to keep it's rotation going. I have tried everything in the sticky (I didn't see any of those power saving settings in my BIOS and nothing appeared to be set for power saving). I did force my nVidia Vsync to On (was on Application Controlled), which didn't help or hurt the problem.

In looking at the fan when it does rotate, it appears to be off balance. I bought this at Best Buy, so I am going to attempt to exchange and try another unit. I will update this post once completed.

If this is just how the power supply is, I will be buying another model/brand, as I cannot take this noise. When you have a gaming rig, your power supply shouldn't be the loudest hardware from the PC.

Thanks for the information. In looking into this further, I will be returning this unit for a refund and purchase the Corsair CX750M.

It appears for Series AX, HX, TX and GS, they all "feature" a non-operational fan for when the load doesn't demand it. The CX series doesn't explicitly state this functionality (they eldue to "quieter operation" at lower loads), which I would actually perfer to have constant fan operation as opposed to the chirping sound the GS700 is making.

I think in my particular setup, my load is right on the borderline of whether the fan should run during normal operation. I decided to try and overload my system and force the fan to run. I ran BF3 Ultra, FarCry3 Ultra and played a 30+GB MKV file to 2 extended 1920x1080 displays. After about 1 minute of these items all running, the PSU fan kicked on and stayed on with no chirping.

Hopefully, the CX series has a constantly running, variable speed fan. If you can confirm that for me, I would be much appreciative of that information.

Yes, a lot of our PSUs now have that feature, but a noise like that isn't normal for them, even if it's on the border of when the fan should turn on or off.

Yes, the CX750M fan should always be on. At around 50% load is when the fan starts to increase in speed (unless the thermal controls kick in first).

Just to follow up, I returned the GS 700 for a full refund with no issues. I purchased the CX750M and received it today. Installed and it is perfect! Quiet fan operation (even under heavy loads) and no whining or clicking noises. I would recommend anyone wanting constant fan operation to purchase a CX series.

It truly is quiet (even with constant fan operation) and also gives me piece of mind it is helping vent my entire system.

Thanks Technobeard for your quick and informative responses.

Most later batches should not have previous issues, as we would normally address them and corrected them right away. All current batches from the GS series should be problem free, even then, those issues were not wide spread.
