Accidentally installed a ram stick backwards (Dominator Platinum)

Yesterday night I installed a new sound card in my computer and I thought while I was at it I would also change my ram sticks' configuration (my H80i rad was blocking some of the slots, forcing me to run my 32gb (4x8) kit in dual-channel mode instead of quad-channel).

So I moved the ram to clear the slots and installed the ram, a bit in a hurry and in darkness, with my case standing upwards and I unfortunately put one stick backwards, it seemed to clip-in properly but in fact did not, obviously.

So I powered my pc on and it would shut down after a split second, and during the time I manage to blind-find the psu switch it rebooted and failed again.

So that's when I saw one stick was looking a bit higher than the others (I was like "**** me!"...).

Now I tried all sticks in each slot individually, as well as all 4 sticks i every configuration possible, claring cmos everytime, but no go, my mobo's debug led always displays the code 19 which corresponds to "pre-memory south bridge initialization is started" (and of course the pc won't post).

There is no visual trace of damage on the ram sticks/pins whatsoever (neither on the mobo's ram slots).

The leds on the sticks still light up and if I remove all sticks my mobo bips and displays the 55 code indicating no memory is installed.

These two facts make me think my motherboard is ok but the ram is dead ?What do you guys think ? I have no other ddr3 ram around to test atm.

Will corsair accept an RMA in this kind of situation ? (I bought this kit less than 2 weeks ago... And I live in France if this matters)

The kit's reference is : CMD32GX3M4A1600C9

I'm so pissed about myself right now, don't go too hard on me for making this noob mistake:[pouts:

My configuration :

  • CPU : i7 3930k
  • Motherboard : AsRock X79 Extreme 9
  • GPU : Sapphirre HD 7970 Vapor-X Ghz Edition
  • RAM : Corsair Dominator Platinum 1600mhz/CL9 (32gb - 4x8gb)
  • PSU : Corsair HX1050
  • Cooling : Corsair H80i Watercooling kit
  • Sound Card : Asus Xonar Essence STX
  • Case : NZXT Phantom

Off-subject : For the same build I have an H80i with the red color led not working and my HX1050 psu didn't come with the nice little case badge I saw in the unboxings :(

Do you think the upcoming new H80i v1.0.5 firmware might solve the led issue ? (mine is currently running firmware 1.0.0)

what happens if you just try booting with 1 stick at a time?

All the fans and leds in my pc start normally, same for the disc drive, hdd, gpu etc... Even my chipset fan starts spinning.

Except it doesn't post, I have no video output, no post beep and my (corsair k90) keyboard's leds don't light up/isn't powered on. The mobo always displays this same debug code 19 which corresponds to "pre-memory south bridge initialization is started", no matter which stick is in which slot (1 at a time). But if there are no sticks inserted the mobo will beep and display the debug code 55 to indicate no memory is installed.

Thank you very much for the quick answer !

use a magnifying glass on the ram slots, sounds like maybe a bent pin or something.

sorry to hear though, we have all had "oh f*%k" moments, its like a right of passage in computer building.

Yeah that definitely was one of these "oh f*%k" moments:!:

That'll teach me a lesson anyway, I'll never be lazy again when changing stuff in my computer, especially when installing ram.

I'm going to inspect this but from this statement at least some of the sticks should be working as I only put one of the sticks backwards right ?

Is it possible that the wrongly placed stick created a shortcut which toasted all four sticks ? (they were in dual-channel mode, in 4 neighbour slots).

I'm thinking I might try to order a cheap generic ddr3 kit to test in my board as I'm afraid my mobo's ram slots or my memory controller could be dead too...

So anyway, it is my understanding I don't stand a chance for an RMA request ? :(:

I really hate to say this, but i think it's more plausible that the board or CPU fried.

I would seriously think about taking your components to a good computer shop for testing rather than RMA'ing various components until you figure out what s exactly bad.

Yeah that's a good idea thanks, you're right, I'll do that monday or tuesday.

Thanks a lot for the help guys, I appreciate it.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS on the board? You said the board seems to be in a pre- memory check with a code 19. Maybe just maybe clearing the CMOS might reset the board somehow? At this point you have nothing to lose.
