[h100i] Static Pressure push or pull

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into upgrading my stock fans on my h100i to the Corsair SP120 High Performance 120mm case fans. I'm currently pulling air into the case per documentation (screen shots below).

Do I need SP fans for pulling air in? I can see if a fan is trying to push air though a dense radiator, as you'll want to concentrate the air to help prevent it taking the path of least resistance (out the sides of the rad).

Am I being silly, or is pulling needed due to the same reasons?

By default, we do recommend the fans pushing air through the radiator into the case.. but of course this can always change, depending on how the system is set up.

SP120 fans would be your pick when mounting a fan on a radiator or any place where air flow is restricted.

I have my H100i set up in a Cooler Master Cosmos II case w/ 2 fans pulling and 1 (due to space limitations) internally pushing into the radiator. Should I use Static Pressure fans for "push" operations and High Flow for the "pull"? All Static for both? Should the mantra be: Blow directly into something: use High Static Pressure; blowing into open air: use High Flow? Like, if I wanted to put a dust filter on the intake side of a fan, High Flow is fine, but if, for whatever reason, I were to put a filter on the outlet side, I should use High Static P?

And since you guys seem to like to pull air from the outside across the radiator (I can see why that makes sense) do you recommend switching side fans to blow air out? You just want to maintain a slightly positive internal air pressure (does "Delta Pressure" apply here?) to help keep the dust from entering other small openings, right?

Both static pressure fans if possible. It's optimal that way.

Try both orientation and see what set up is best for your system. Results will vary from one system to another.

Thanks, RG! I WILL try both! I'm sure the motherboard would like the additional gust of air even if it's a little warmer... Going to order a couple more statics now... :D

Can you recommend good filters to put on the intake fans? I've tried several over the years ranging from heavy duty wire mesh (easy to vacuum off) to foam (probably better but harder to clean).

Concerning the side fans (I have 2)...I'm guessing I'm going to want to plug those into the H100i as well. Since there are only 4 fan connectors on the pump housing, I'll need a Y adapter. Then, when all is said and done, I'll have the H100i controlling the fans on the radiator and the side so they'll be in sync and then let the motherboard control the front and rear case fans. Or should I just take the plunge and get the Commander kit? ;) I've gotten to the point in my life where I want my rig to stay quiet when I'm not gaming so I've been getting more and more into tweaking/controlling the cooling system these days...

So many things to try... Love me some rig building! :) Thanks again for the advice!
