CMP16GX3M4A1333C9 - Asus M5A99X - AMD FX 8350 - Compatibility?

Hi guys,

I've managed to return the CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 memory which was not working well on the specs mentioned in the title of this post and so I am looking for alternatives that will definitely work.

I have in mind the CMP16GX3M4A1333C9 ram as that looks quite nice and has good benchmarks for 1333. I am sceptical about going for another set of 1866 ram as the compatibility seems to vary and AMD FX 8350 processors can only support two sticks running at 1866 or 1600, dual, but most companies seem to only be selling 16GB sets in 4s not 2s for some reason (hence why I went for the Vengeance ram in the first place). The Dominator ram comes up as compatible using Corsair's memory finder when I enter the Asus mobo, but as I've discovered the processor is also part of this compatibility check but none of the memory manufacturers seem to take this into account, or indeed the motherboard manufacturers when produce QVLs. For instance Asus list Corsair 4x8GB (32GB) 1866mhz sets as compatible, even though most processors running on this mobo would not be able to support 4x1866mhz as 2x1866 is the limit. Sorry I digress...

So, would this ram be compatible/can anyone verify that they have this ram working under a similar spec as mine?

Or any other suggestions? Looking for 16GB, 1333mhz (or higher if you can suggest two stick sets) DDR3 (of course).

Thanks for all your help!

Dan

There are plenty of 2x8gig kits available, both in the vengeance, Dominator and Dominator Platinum series. Any of which should be compatible with your MB

As far as the CPU being part of the role your correct, but not in the way you have stated. The CPU is basically responsible for the actual speed you can achieve or what is speed is supported by that CPU. If you exceed those speeds then your overclocking.. But it doesn't really come into play so much with compatibility, that is more the responsibility of the chipset that is used with the MB and why CPU's are not listed in compatibility charts.

Each chipset is pretty specific to which CPU's can be used.

So based on the MB's chipset any of the 2x8 gig kits Corsair has to offer should be compatible. But depending on the CPU you have , that determines the speed you can run those at.

If Corsair has that kit listed in the memory finder, that means that they have tested that exact kit with that exact MB. They should run just fine.

Hi again peanutz,

Thanks for the knowledge about chipsets and stuff, very useful. What I probably meant to say is that most of the memory finder sections on manufacturers websites don't seem to be allowing you to select 2x8gb sets at the moment, which I find confusing!

I think I'll be going with the CMP 1333 as it's listed as compatible and all the other suggestions Corsair give for compatible memory don't seem to match up with the 8350s limit on occupied slots and speed, for instance they suggest 4x4gb sets of 1600mhz which would only work in single channel mode I think because of the FX processor. Besides the benchmarks for the CMP 1333 are quite astounding considering the specs they run at in comparison.

Thanks for your help again!

No, the would run in dual channel. Single , dual, quad ect is a function of the MB and is decided by the number of slots populated on the MB. So a MB with 4 slots would run in dual channel .Two DIMMs per channel. Again it has nothing to do with the processor and everything to do with the MB and chipset. I can guarantee you that the 2x8 gig kits are completely compatible . As a mater of fact that would be better because the less sticks you use the less strain you put on the memory controller in your CPU.

This can be seen in the compatibility chart listed here

http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=110429

As you can see the more sticks added the slower you are able to run the memory .

Hi again,

I am learning all the time with this, thanks for the information. I must have gotten confused with the AMD chart and what dual and single rank mean - thinking they meant dual and single channel.....silly me! :)

I will take a look again at the compatible memory list and have a think!

Thanks again!
