CMZ16GX3M2A1866C9 - Problems with Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 & AMD FX 8350

Hi there,

I am having an issue with the ram I bought for my new system, lots of errors in Memtest+ starting at Test #6. One stick seems to be worse than the other (around 20 errors compared to over 250). I believe the ram may be faulty due to these test results, however does anyone else have any experience of getting these specific sticks to run under this MB and processor? Preferably at 1866.

For additional information, I have tested each stick together and individually and in different slots, same level of failures each time. I have also tried another stick of ram which I know is working and that returned no errors. I am able to boot, however I am receiving random BSODs every so often. The timings have been set correctly each time I have tested, running at both 1333 and 1866 to see if that makes a difference, which it didn't. The motherboard seems to be reporting the right values for timings and voltages when I change them to be correct (if I have to, that is). I have ran a Prime95 test on the processor and no errors, so I don't think it has a problem or the MB.

Thanks for your help,

Dan

Do you have the latest BIOS for your MB? If not please flash it to the latest version. But just from what you are describing it would appear that the MB is faulty and why both sticks are reporting errors. '

Since the memory is physically tested before it leaves the factory it would be pretty much impossible for you to get an entire kit that is bad. So that would point towards other issues in your system.

Hi Peanutz,

Sorry forgot to mention that I have flashed to the latest BIOS.

I'm not sure how it could be a motherboard issue if one stick returns around 20 errors and the other over 250 consistently, but I'm not a memory expert. Also I have tried another Corsair stick, CMX4GX3M1A1600C9, I think is the model and that returned no errors. Could it therefore just be an incompatibility with these sticks and the MB?

Thanks for your help,

Dan

It's a slim possibility...but can happen every now and then depending on the manufacturer of the board.

If you want to have the kit replaced you always have that choice. Just use the link on the left to request an RMA. If you get a second kit that acts the same way i would look at other hardware for the problem

Did you by any chance try raising the memory voltage any? I would re-test with the memory set at 1.6v &.2v to your northbridge or memory controller voltage and if you still get the same issue have the kit replaced.

Hi,

I've tried upping the voltage to the ram to 1.6v, using both 1333mhz & correct timings as well as 1866. Unfortunately errors start occuring from test #1 onwards now instead of just from test #6. This is on the worst stick of the two, I haven't tried the other yet.

I couldn't add 0.2v onto the Northbridge though as that would have been its maximum, and I was a little worried about pushing it that high. Does that make a difference, I assume it does?

I also managed to find the way to select the XMP profile for 1866mhz inside the BIOS using DOCP but that didn't solve any issues.

Any more thoughts or do you think this is a rare case of two faulty sticks?

Thanks again,

Dan

Just an update,

Tried the stick that wasn't returning as bad an amount of errors as well now, still the same issues. However, after raising the voltage to 1.6v, as I did on the other stick, the errors didn't start until test #6 again compared to the worse stick which started returning errors from test #1 after a voltage increase.

Any more suggestions or is this just weirdness?

I have filed an RMA request but have had no reply, did this the other day just to get the ball rolling btw. Case no. #5634345

Is there any possibility of being sent a test set of another version of Corsair ram? Or to replace the vengeance completely? The XMS model I tried earlier on which returned no errors seemed to be good enough, I've seen a CMX16GX3M2A1333C9 model which seems ok on the memory benchmark. At this point I would just like to get the system running!! :)

Thanks,

Dan

Yes, try running them at 1600mhz. While the AMD CPU is supposed to be able to run 1866mhz, it's still not a guarantee. Even RamGuy will back up that statement. But it's worth a shot. Just use the same timings as you would for 1866 but change the frequency .

Highly unlikely. When you RMA your memory it will be for the exact same kit and they wont switch part numbers unless there are other circumstances that have to be met. Such as kits that are no longer in production .

At any rate if your memory is not that old. you might try returning them to your reseller if you can for a refund and buy another kit if you are wanting to switch product lines.

Otherwise just use the link on the left to request an RMA and have them replaced. If you call CS by phone with your case number or RMA number once issued you can ask for an advanced replacement to keep your down time to a minimum.

I had the same issue, it is good ram but not for your setting, its just to finicky to get to work. I returned it for patriot black mamba 2133 and it runs naively on my system at 1600 9-9-9-24. Just stop wasteing your time and get different ram
