dream3
Heello! I have a brand new asus p8z77-m and I got 2 of these RAM memories: Corsair Vengeance 8gb (1x8gb) CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10. The thing is one piece is version 2.21 and the other one is version 3.24. Am I going to have any trouble if I dual channel them? These 2 version way too different? What should I do? Very possible, but no way to say for sure. This is why you should always purchase matched kits. Just to add to this there is also no way for Corsair to guarantee correct operation or rated speeds unless all your memory comes from one single tested package. Best bet would be to return them and get matched 16 gig kit.

Anyway, is there a kind of test I could do it myself to really find out if there would be a problem or not? Cause it would spare me the hassle. ps: I did some research before getting these RAM and people told me I could get 1 8gb stick only and later upgrade to 16gb. How could they have told me that if obviously I would never get a matching pair when I decided to do it?
dream3
So, I went into the ASUS SPD Information and there I compared the 2 slots the RAMs are and there's absolutely no change at all in those values displayed there. Does that mean Im lucky and my two sticks are identical?

But with your MB you should be using two sticks at a time anyway so the board will run in dual channel instead of single channel. Your basically cutting memory operations in half...Kind of like the amount of traffic of a one lane road VS a two lane highway... Not to mention the issue with two non matched sticks. Anyway, is there a kind of test I could do it myself to really find out if there would be a problem or not? Cause it would spare me the hassle. Once installed you can test the system with memtest to see if the machine is stable. So, I went into the ASUS SPD Information and there I compared the 2 slots the RAMs are and there's absolutely no change at all in those values displayed there. Does that mean Im lucky and my two sticks are identical? NO, just that you have two sticks of the same part number. Unless they were packaged together they are not a matched set because they would not have been tested with each other. Also the two different version numbers would indicate that the two sticks are made from different components.
dream3
Alright, Im gonna get this Memtest and see what I can find out. If it says they are stable, then Im good to go with them?
dream3
I just ran Memtest and the first thing I get is an "error information" message right bellow the "open log' button. I have finished the test once and one of the windows reported no error at 220%. The other instances got to 10x% and no error too. But sometimes the pc will also shutdown... Im very confused. Can someone tell me what this data means?

Hi dream3 Corsair don't support mixing of memory or memory kits. As ther not been test together and as you have a version 2.21 and the other one is version 3.24. The chance that thos 2 memory sticks worck together full speed is weak. you could try at 1333MHZ you will have more chance to get stability ove your memory. Did you hceck for las bios update? As it improve compatibility and stability ove system. Hope this help. Sincerly yours.

All your looking for is errors of ANY kind in memtest. Are you using the version of memtest posted in the left sidebar of the forums here. Or some other version. If it is something differnt lets try the one posted here http://memtest.org/ You'll have to burn it to a disc and then boot to the CD drive. Or you ccan also run it from a flash drive. When you say it's shutting down , is it a hard shut down like someone shut the switch off or does it just hang or get stuck? Is this something that it did before you bought the second stick? dream3
Oh sorry, the shutdown was occurring cause I was running way more instances than the needed, guess the bluescreen happened for lack of RAM then. I ran overnight the most instances it let me and this is the result: http://i47.tinypic.com/124945k.png Im using the MemTest Pro Version 4.0. Am I good ot go now or should I download the one you linked and try the flashdrive boot?
peanutz94
Am I good ot go now or should I download the one you linked and try the flashdrive boot? It loks okay, but just to be sure I would try the one I linked too because it is the only software Corsair uses to diagnose memory issues. It also runs outside of the windows environment so there is no interference. No need to let it run real long, just two passes . and if it comes up clean you should be good to go. dream3
So afterall this means my 8gb 2 single module sticks perform the same as a 16gb kit, is that right? Even if im planning on OCing?

There is no way to tell that without benching it with a 16gig kit. It may or may not overclock the same as a matched kit either.
dream3
alright man, thanks for all the effort here! one last thing: do you recommend ram overclocking? will I "feel" any difference? ps: ill work with 3d rendering.
peanutz94
do you recommend ram overclocking? will I "feel" any difference?Depends on the overclock, but generally you'll get a better performance boost from higher CPU overclocks than you would memory overclocks. Actually in your case capacity would be a better boost than speed.
