England
Hi, My brother has given my a shell of a PC to fix for him. I've added a Corsair 550d and a Corsair SSD, but I want to go for the hat-trick and go for some Corsair RAM. I know this board is funny, but I don't want to over clock the CPU or RAM, I don't want to run anything that's not compatible. I just want a simple 4x2GB 1333mhz set-up to give him the maximum of 8GB RAM. Now, I've seen the 'Corsair CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 XMS3 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR3 SDRAM Memory' kit for sale at a decent price. If I slot this into the four RAM slots on the MoBo, and instal x64 Windows 7, will it recognise it? I'm really looking for a yes or a no. I'm not to clued up on the RAM tech details. peanutz94
Unfortunatly Corsair would not have anything compatible with that board as of now. Unless you could find old stock somewhere but that may be hard to find. The issue is the Nvidia chipset in that board. It's limited to memory modules constructed of 256mb IC's and anything Corsair would have to offer today would be constructed with 512mbIC's making them incompatible. So you would need a 2 gig module that has 8 chips on it . If they show up with just 4 chips on it they would not work Now, I've seen the 'Corsair CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 XMS3 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR3 SDRAM Memory' kit for sale at a decent price. Maybe ...Since most places wont let you know what they have in stock ,i would make sure where ever you buy them from has a good return policy in case you decide to go ahead and order them anyway to try. Basically , you may have a hard time finding memory for that board period. But you can tell by looking at the modules. A 4 gig module would need to have 16chips on it . If you have 4 gig modules with just 8chips on them they would not work. Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm actually only looking at the 2gb chips. These are the ones recomended by Corsair's own memory selector tool http://www.corsair.com/cmx8gx3m4b1333c9.html and these are the ones I'm looking at getting (same part number except for the 'B' is now an 'A'). They appear to have the same specs http://www.corsair.com/en/memory-by-product-family/xms-classic/cmx8gx3m4a1333c9.html I'm only guessing, but I'm thinking they're the same RAM, but a slightly later model, or just specifically guaranteed for AMD. If that second lot works the same as the first (which the memory tool selected), then it should work, right?

As ai stated above you can try it but just make sure you have a good return policy . I'm only guessing, but I'm thinking they're the same RAM, but a slightly later model, or just specifically guaranteed for AMD. If that second lot works the same as the first (which the memory tool selected), then it should work, right? Yeah, it would be guess. Modules can have the same part number but different version numbers which indicates the kind and size of chips used to make the modules. What you need is a 2 gig module that has 8x256 mb chips on it. Anythng Corsair is making now would be constructed with 512mb chips and are not compatible with that MB. I understand the frustration, but there is no way to guarantee that either kit would work unless you got old stock somewhere. Also you quoted my first response that was wrong , no big deal, I just wanted you to be aware of that ! You must have been replying to it when i was editing it! :D

I didn't know the tool was out of date. I assume there's no real way (other than actually looking at the module itself) of checking what chips are on it? As an aside, I tried my 2x4gb low-profile modules. They were recognised in the bios, but I've only got windows 32bit, so only 3gb were recognised. Thanks again for your help. I assume there's no real way (other than actually looking at the module itself) of checking what chips are on it? Correct! Unless you can physically see what version number they are there is no way to tell. Most places have no way of knowing or will take the time to let you know what they have on hand. As far as the tool goes it just has not been updated for the older MB's. Anything newer would be correct. You can check them here using the DDR3 IC identification chart listed here. http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68811 As an aside, I tried my 2x4gb low-profile modules. Here is guy with a different MB and same chipset with the same issue. England
What is the part number and version number on those?] Strange thing. I've just installed Windows x64 on a spare drive, popped my RAM back in, and it's recognising all 8gb. I'm either very lucky, or, well, that's about it. Motherboard says 8gb is usable, windows just says there's 8gb. Nothing in brackets, like there sometimes is if it's not using all the ram. These are the sticks I have. In white. http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/vengeance/vengeance-low-profile-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cml8gx3m2a1600c9w.html
England
Version is 8.16 Judging by the chart, I got lucky and the ram I had is 8x256.
peanutz94
Yuppers! That would be lucky! Glad it's all recognized for you. Just post back if you have any further questions.
England
Hmn, according to cpu-z, it's running at 666mhz frequency. In the bios, it's set to be linked to FSB and says 1333mhz. Any settings I need to change or is this just an issue?
peanutz94
Thats correct! DDR stands for Double Data Rate. So you would multiply the 666mhz x 2 which is 1332mhz. Right where it should be;):
England
Ahhhhh, I should have worked that out. Silly me. Thanks so much for your help on this, you've made my life that little bit easier! New RAM (for me!) on the way.

England
I received the new modules today (v7.12). Work like a charm in this MoBo. Obviously, the x.1x versions are the ones people should be looking for (I'm sure somebody will look at this thread in the future). Interesting to not that the packaging has a little window so that you can see the version numbers. If you're looking to put this into a 790i Ultra board, give your local shop a call to see if they have any with that version.
