mwynn2
I am updating out of my old x58 MB. I was looking at the ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 or ASUS Maximus V EXTREME Also picking up this cpu i7 3770k When using the corsair's link for supported memory for these motherboards they have listed using 4 sticks of the vengeance series . The motherboard runs off dual channel. If I buy the quad channel (16 gb) its like $100 more then just buying the dual channel (16 gb). Is running 4 sticks rather than 2 more stable? Heat wise maybe??? Thanks!
JR23
It seems to me there are more kits to choose from when you have quad channel, I think the premium in price is because its tested to work together which obviously is exponentially less likely each time you try and match another module and you would need a quad channel kit to run 8 dimm X79 boards to their full potential which is probably why its expensive  I bought a quad kit as they had higher clocks and lower latency at 1.5v, may be related to improved heat dissipation more metal? iunno really. Maybe the two kits you looked at aren't directly comparable? On another note I would recommend you go for the Maximus over the Sabertooth, I haven't had directly comparable models (P67 Sabertooth) but the quality difference is very noticeable. EDIT: Say you look at CMD16GX3M4A1866C9 and CMD16GX3M2A1866C9 which are directly comparable (same speed, latency and voltage) there is only a $45 difference in RRP? However in your case a 2x8 kit would be preferable because of load on the memory controller. Two sticks is less load than a 4x4 gig kit and would most likely be more stable at lower voltages than if you had all your slots filled. Which almost always involves a bump in either DIMM voltage or memory controller voltage In a quad channel MB 8 sticks would be the same or comparable load as a 4 stick kit would be on a dual channel MB. And heat wouldn't have anything to do with it at all.
mwynn2
Thanks for answering my question! The load on the memory controller makes since! Set I don't know know why I said Vengeance series? I was looking at the Dominator Plats! DUHHH!!
