Maeldor
Hi everyone, nice to meet you all. I hope someone can help me. I turned my computer on today to be greeted by a very alarming message from the Intel Storage Manager telling me one of my drives is about to fail. I thought oh damn, one of my old HDDs is finally failing, but to my shock I noticed it was actually my SSD! I've only had it for just over a year, so I thought this can't be right. Shortly after, Windows also warned me, asking me to immediately make a backup. I've determined from CrystalDiskInfo (and some others) that the SSD Life Left is being reported at 9%. From some quick investigation, I don't think this is accurate (and yes, I read the sticky on interpreting SMART data, further making me believe it's not accurate). Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/fsbUwFE.png How does this look? As you can see, it's only been on for 7971 hours (this actually seems a bit high, considering that would mean it's been on solidly for 332 days out of the year I've had it. That doesn't sound right. What do you think? Am I interpreting that correctly? My computer is definitely not on 90% of each day!) and written just 8.64 TB. From looking at other people's, it's clearly not near the end of its life. So should I be concerned? Why is it reporting 9%? And, more importantly, how do I (can I?) fix this? Every time I boot now, I get warnings about it, and it's annoying – I shouldn't have to put up with that, especially as Windows keeps reminding every 30 minutes or so! Is there a firmware update available that can fix it? I'm on 1.3.2. If I do update the firmware, I won't lose any data, right? This is my OS drive and I can't afford to reinstall my OS right now. Thanks very much, everyone! I hope you can help, as this is a rather alarming thing to be suddenly presented with and it has me worried. Thanks! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2013 Please see Interpreting SMART Data on Corsair SSDs and I would image the drive and then use parted Magic Secure erase the drive and test it with ATTO. Does it perform at spec if so that information is not valid as explained in the link I provided.
Maeldor
Thanks for the reply, but... it was as if you didn't actually read my post. From some quick investigation, I don't think this is accurate (and yes, I read the sticky on interpreting SMART data, further making me believe it's not accurate). If I do update the firmware, I won't lose any data, right? This is my OS drive and I can't afford to reinstall my OS right now. None of my questions were answered either :( Am I interpreting the Power On Hours correctly? Should I be concerned? Will a firmware update fix this? I would really appreciate some answers. I believe the drive is fine (unless someone tells me otherwise), I just want to know how to stop it reporting 9% SDD Life Left. Thank you.
Toasted
The firmware update is not intended to be format the drive, but i would backup your most important files in case it does happen. 1. The value is probably incorrect. 2. Run a ATTO benchmark and post a screenshot, Are you also experiencing any problems with the drive? 3. I don't think a FW update will change the S.M.A.R.T. values but you are free to try it. You can disable S.M.A.R.T. monitoring in the BIOS to prevent the error from popping up every time you start your computer.
Maeldor
Thanks very much, Toasted. Here's my ATTO screenshot. I hope the settings are sufficient; if not, I'll do it again with your recommendations: http://i.imgur.com/YSoAS7E.png I have not experienced any issues with the drive so far. Does everything look okay on the benchmark? I'm not using SATA 3 (I have a P5K Deluxe) so I expect the results will be slower than expected for the drive. I guess a firmware update is worth a try. Because it's my OS drive, will I need an alternative boot OS to flash the firmware? That might be tricky, unless there's a boot version (will this work?) or Linux version I can do from something like Knoppix. And good to know I can at least disable SMART in the BIOS. A bit wary of doing that as it may come in helpful for my other drives (unless I can disable it on a per-drive basis), and I'd rather get the actual issue sorted, but thanks for the recommendation! Thanks!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2013 Yes you are running at S-ATA 2 speeds which is what the controller supports and you can use a Third Party controller and you will likely get better results with the drive. Andf the point of what I posted was that if you did those steps your questions would be mute. The Smart Date cannot be read reliably from third party software as explained in the like I previously provided so that information cannot be trusted and since the ATTO scores show no problems and if you are not having a problem I would try the firmware update as it will reset the Smart data on the drive and you may not get such alarming results but ultimately it will not matter as we do not support it in either case. Maeldor
Cool! Thanks very much, RAM GUY. I'll update the firmware when I get a chance. I'm going away for a month tomorrow, so I'll wait till I get back. I'll update this thread with my results. One thing that hasn't been clarified: as it's my OS drive, I doubt I'm going to be able to just update it from the OS that it's running from (Windows 7 64 bit). I have got Win7PE ready on a disc, though, so it's perfectly fine to use that, right? Thanks!
Toasted
You can update the SSD firmware even if it's an OS drive.
