malct
Apologies if this appears elsewhere but I can't find it. I have just bought 2 sets of this ram i.e. 4 x 4gb sticks to upgrade a Gigabyte MB EX58-UD3R. The MB currently has 3 x 2gb Corsair chips and I wonder now if I have bought the right parts as the box says they are for a dual channel processor and I have an Intel i7 960 quad core 3.2. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. It's a long time since I've added memory to a PC and any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.:!:
peanutz94
As far as dual channel, triple channel and so is concerned , that is a function of the MB and not the memory. So it' doesn't make any difference as far as the memory s concerned to a point.Yes, the modules would be "compatible" but you would only want to use thre of the four sticks since your MB uses either 3 or 6 sticks. Adding a fourth would either just add to the total capacity or in most cases puts the MB into a crappy "hybrid" mode that doesn't quite let the CPU run the memory at it's full potential. However,Corsair does not suggest mixing/combining kits even if they are the same part numbers because it can be hit or miss at best. Any two random kits could actually be incompatible with each other. So it's best to replace and not add memory to your system. Also when mixing/combining kits Corsair has no way of guaranteeing that the modules would run correctly or at their rated speeds. In your case there is a good possibility that you would need to run them at 1066mhz(next lowest SPD) to get them to play nice with each other. I really would suggest you return them and get one single triple channel kit that would meet your capacity needs. And with that MB you would be looking for 6,12,or 24 gig kit's. I looked you MB up in the memory finder and here is a complete list of modules that are rated for that MB http://www2.corsair.com/configurator/product_results.aspx?sc=us&id=933074
