Memtest showing 3316MB not 24GB

I just installed two sets of tripple channel 12GB CMX12GX3M3A1333C9 into my Intel DX58OG motherboard with the latest BIOS (1/29/12). I have attached two JPG that show my system settings.

My BIOS, Windows 7 64bit, CPU-z and Everest show that I have 24GB memory. When I run memtest86 4.2 it indicates I only have 3316MB. Memtest does show all six slots are occupied by 4GB memory with the correct part number. I also tried Memtest86 5.00b Beta and it also shows only 3316MB. I have been able to run programs in Windows that use over 16GB memory and they function fine.

I searched the web and found that some people have trouble with 24GB memory in X58 boards. My issues is'nt that my system won't run with 24GB rather that I cannot verify beyond running my programs that the system is stable or not and the RAM is fully compatible.

Thank You

Additional news:

I performed Prime95 setting it to use 20GB of memory. After 14 minutes the system hard froze.

I then set the memory timings to 1066Mhz and did the same Prime95 test. Same result, hard freeze.

I then removed one set of 12GB CMX12GX3M3A1333C9 memory and booted into the BIOS and set timings to 1066Mhz. I then ran memtest86 4.2 and again it reported only 3316MB of memory. I booted into Windows and it reported 12GB memory. I then ran Prime95 set to use 10GB memory and it ran for 30 minutes with no lock up.

When I ordered this memory from Corsair as a replacement of the two sets of 8GB CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 dual channel memory that was installed (not a good idea) I was told on the phone that the CMX12GX3M3A1333C9 was compatible with my board.

What is going on?

I did as you recommended setting the BIOS as you suggested at stock speeds and 1.6V. I ran memtest with just one set of matched triple channel 12GB memory (both sets are version 5.12). Memtest still only shows 3316MB. Something is not compatible here, Memtest or my BIOS with these memories.

I think there was a misunderstanding with Corsair customer service. Originally I had two sets of 8GB ram and was trying to get three sets running (24GB). They told me that I should not mix the sets. I told them that I needed 24GB and they offered to have all my sets replace with 24GB. For some reason they agreed that two sets of the 12GB CMX12GX3M3A1333C9 would work. That’s why I have these two sets which I received last Friday.

Should they have recommended the Vengeance 24GB Triple Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ24GX3M6A1600C9). Would that set work with my motherboard? Please advise.

Thank You

Hello RAM Guy,

I did some testing this morning. I found out why memtest was not showing the correct memory size. If RAID is enabled memtest will not function properly. I disable RAID and got one set of the GMX12G to show up properly on memtest (see JPG).

I also wanted to point out that with my mixed set of dual channel CMX8G 1333 (total 16GB) they do have XMP profiles (See attached JPG). I coppied the XMP 1333 profile (See attached JPG) and used all the same values for running the CMX12G and have been able to run PRIME95 using 11GB of memory for over 20 minutes so far with no lock up, which is longer than I have been able to before.

I think my motherboard needs to have the correct XMP values which my GMX8G were programmed with. My motherboard can not automatically configure proper values with the GMX12G since it as you said is not XMP even though they are both XMS3 1333 memory.

Thank You

I have installed both sets of CMX12GX3M3A1333C9 a total of 24GB. I then reset my bios to default (no RAID) and set timings and voltage to the XMP values I got from my CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 memory. I then booted into memtest. It shows correct values and is 30% complete with no errors so far.

If it finishes with no errors will it mean that it is stable? Should I still replace them with a six memory 24Gb set like the Vengeance 24GB Triple Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CMZ24GX3M6A1600C9)?

Thank you

Yes and no, it just means that the memory tests out fine but your system could still be unstable when mixing kits. So, if you still have issues with every day use or what ever , then yes, it would be best to return/replace with one single matched kit.
