redbull2013
I have an older laptop (HP Pavilion ze4900) which I use for surfing while sitting on the couch. It's been dropped a couple of times, so the screen is going out periodically. I picked up a slightly newer model, Pavilion ze5300, which had no HDD or wireless card or memory. I put the HDD, memory and wireless network card and memory into the new laptop, it won't POST with 1GB of memory. It POSTs and works just fine with two 256MB modules of memory, but won't POST with two 512MB of memory, or with one 512MB memory module. Both the 256MB modules and the 512MB modules are PC2700 DDR333. The 512MB modules are Corsair and I know they work just fine in the ze4900. Both the ze4900 and the ze5300 specs say that they both recognize 512MB memory modules and take up to 1GB of memory. I flashed BIOS with no change. Tried putting a 256mb module in together with a 512, it only recognizes the 256 module, whether it is in slot 1 or 2 Any other ideas?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 28, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 28, 2013 How many Memory IC's are on the modules? There will have to be 16 Memory IC's on the modules for them to work with this system and I suspect that there are only 4 on each side of the modules which would not be compatible. You may have to go back to the NB Manufacturer for memory that is compatible with this system. Sorry.
redbull2013
OK, wow, I would not have guessed that in a million years, especially because the same module worked on the ze4900 and also because the memory that's in there now and working has 4 IC's per side. Is it that the mobo can't handle 64MB IC's?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2013 It depends on the size of the module if it is a 512Meg Module and only has 4 IC's per side for 8 total then it is 64M X 8 and will work but if its 1.0 Gig and only has 8 IC's then it is 128M X 8 and will not work on that system. redbull2013
They are two 512MB modules with 4 IC's per side. I just got a couple of Samsung modules, pc2100 this time, so I'll try those.
redbull2013
So I tried the PC2100 modules. Laptop posts with one 512MB module and one 256MB module (works with either module in Slot 1), but not two 512MB modules.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 5, 2013 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 5, 2013 I would check for a BIOS update on that system.
