HX750 Failing To Power Up System

Hi, I just brought and fitted a Corsair HX750 but it isn't booting up the system. The light on the motherboard comes on to confirm that there is power going to it but when I try and turn it on nothing happens except a faint click that sounds like it is coming from around the CPU (only the first time after turning the PSU on then after that nothing happens when trying to turn the PC on and off).

I checked that I had done all all of the wiring correctly and that seemed ok. I then took the PC apart to check that I hadn't damaged anything and that seemed ok. Next I tried refitting the old PSU that I was replacing back in and the system powered up so I put the HX750 back into the PC and tried the paperclip test and the fans came on so finally I tried resetting the CMOS and still the system will not power up with the HX750.

Does anyone know if it is a fault with the PSU and I just need to replace it, if there is a problem with my motherboard or a compatibility issue with the PSU and my motherboard? Or does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try next?

Your motherboard could be grounding out on the case, and the motherboard/psu have features that prevent your system from booting up and destroying your motherboard/psu. Check the case standoffs and make sure one of them isn't making contact with solder points on the back of the motherboard.

 

Another possibility is that the POWER SW cable is faulty or the polarity is wrong. Check your motherboard manual for proper polarity. If the cable seems fine, you can use a screwdriver between the POWER SW pins on the motherboard it just completes the circuit just like the power switch should do.

Thanks for the reply, I also thought that the motherboard might have been knocked or while I was cleaning up the case I might have gotten some dust behind the motherboard and caused the motherboard to be grounded but it seemed ok when I took it off. After I checked that I put it back together and plugged in the old power-supply and it all worked again so I think the power switch is still ok.

I think it probably is the PSU unfortunately but I want to as sure as I can before I send it back and ask for a replacement. I'm struggling to think what else it could be as there shouldn't be a compatibility with the motherboard and the HX750 is 150W more powerful than the PSU it's replacing so that shouldn't be an issue.

I don't think it's compatible... That MB uses an older ATX spec (2.0) than what the new Corsair PSU's use. They are only compatible back to 2.01 so that would cause the MB to fail to power up!

 

Conforms to the latest ATX12V v2.31 and EPS 2.92 standards, and is backward compatible with the ATX12V 2.2 and ATX12V 2.01 standards

Yes using the cables that came with the HX750

 

I don't think it's compatible... That MB uses an older ATX spec (2.0) than what the new Corsair PSU's use. They are only compatible back to 2.01 so that would cause the MB to fail to power up!

 

Ok though I thought that the ATX v2 standard was backward compatible? As in v2.3 would work down to v2.0. Also v2.01 was only a minor revision from v2 so surely that should be compatible?

I would check the MB spec the major difference was ATX 2.0 like ATX 1.3 has the -5 Volt rail was the major difference and most MB's using AMD 64 CPU and or Intel LGA 775 or newer are all ATX 2.01 Compatible.
