Horrible experience installing H80i

Hello All,

I'm new to this forum and registered just to post this.

I'm a VP at a major silicon valley tech company, have an EE degree and 30+ years of experience in both HW and SW development, including a decade or so doing PC chipsets. I've built dozens of PCs for my own and my family's use.

I recently decide to replace the Coolermaster V6 in one of my gaming systems with a new H80i in hopes of making the system even quieter. The V6 does a very good job but it was audible under load.

The system in question has an Asus P8P66 MB with a 2600K CPU and is running Windows 8.

Given this set-up, you can imagine the disaster which ensued when I installed the H80i.

The Corsair link SW installs cleanly but does nothing useful. (I later figured out this was due to lack of Win8 compatibility).

The fans either run at a blazing speed or make a horible growling noised. I'm instructed to install new firmware by the FAQ page, but no firmware is to be found.

I guess I'm supposed to patiently wait for some unknown time period until new software and firmware arrives and meanwhile put up with obnoxious noise from the system.

For the time being, I've installed 2 PWM-capable fans along with a Y-cable and am using MB-based fan control. In the end this is no real improvement over the existing fansink I had.

I read a few web reviews of the H80i and it sounded great. I should have dug deeper before wasting my time on it.

There was a sticky forum post with a firmware update and new version of the corsairlink software that Corsair had provided that was supposed to fix the problems you are experiencing as well as some others. Unfortunately, the firmware update was causing other issues and bricking some users systems and the thread (and the updated firmware link) has since been pulled.

Personally, I think they should have just pulled the links to the firmware/software update and left the post up there so we could follow the progress of development of a working firmware. It has been over two months since the last publicly released firmware update and a couple of weeks since the thread was pulled.

We have since been in the dark on any sort of resolution. Silence from Corsair (much quieter than their coolers) seems to be the method of dealing with it.

I understand their support staff can feel overwhelmed and frustrated by all of the issues people are reporting over and over. But a sticky note saying "we are aware some users may be experiencing one (or more) of the following problems..., here are temporary recommended solutions" (some which you have already implemented Noircogi), "and we are working towards a resolution" sure would be nice and may mitigate some customer frustration and dissatisfaction.

From what I can garner from various posts here, they are shipping versions now with a 1.0.5 firmware, (newer than the flaky one they released and then yanked). So it seems they are trying to address the problem by getting a working solution out in the newly shipped units before showing any of the early adopters any love.

Hopefully your wait for a solution will not be as long as some of us others.

Not really sure how many times I have mentioned the reason why we've pulled the FW 1.04, but I will say it again anyway. The 1.04 version was initially released to address the buzzing/rattle noise coming from the stock fans, which it did the job and fixed the issue BUT on the same intent to fix the problem, it did cause some other issues. Users were reporting that units were no longer seen in Corsair Link after the firmware flash. At first, the data was anecdotal, because we've tested numerous units on hand and tried to replicate what was being reported from different forums and our own web support. After x amount of units tested, we were not able to re produce the problems that people are stating/reporting. We are well aware of these issues and we are working hard to get this matter addressed as quickly as possible.
