Toasted
Find out which application is accessing the disk. Processes > Click Disk See if you can enable AHCI on your Macbook pro as that may help with the performance.

Toasted
Have you found out which process is accessing the disk via Task Manager or it's not listed there?
atmuc
i think problem is not about which application access disk. activity is %100 while there is no read/write load and no queued read/write process. simple access cause this freeze. win xp and vista has no problem. windows 7 and windows8 has problem with disk disk on early 2011 macbook pro.
