Stewstews
Hey all, Any ideas of the following scenario? I have a Metabox P150EM (a Clevo laptop), which supports 32GB of RAM. I have 4x 8GB CMSX8GX3M1A1600C10 sticks. When running 32GB RAM, I have random memory crashes (BSOD). When running 16GB or less, it is fine. I have been running Memtest86+ v4.20 alot to test for memory errors. I've run each single 8GB stick in different slots and not encountered an error. I've run them in pairs at 16GB, also no errors. However run 32GB and I get errors straight up! Been at this for a while, but only ever found issues when running 32GB. Metabox have provided me with an alternate set of 32GB RAM to test, and it works without error. Any ideas on how I can identify which stick of RAM is the issue? Or other causes? Thanks in advance for any help and advice! Cheers, Stewstews
peanutz94
I don't believe the issue is the memory itself rather than the fact that you bought 4 single 8 gig sitcks vs a matched 32 gig kit which makes a huge difference. This would also explain why the 32 gig set from Metabox works and the single sticks at 32gigs does not. And why you can get 16 gigs stable, and not after adding additional sticks. Basically Corsair see's it as mixing memory(even if you have multiples of the same exact part number) because they were not matched at the factory. And it really does make a huge a difference. Since you have already tested them one up that would confirm that the memory is indeed fine. For corsair to guarantee complete compatibilty and rated speeds, all your memory must come from one single tested kit. Does your BIOS allow for any voltage or timing adjustments? You could try lowering the frequency to 1333mhz instead of 1600mhz and that MAY get them to play nice with each other, but that's not a guarantee either. Stewstews
Hey thanks for your response! Unfortunately the BIOS is totally locked down. Frustrating on that front. If the kit vs individual sticks is the case, what are the best options from here? Suck it up and live with 16GB? Perhaps I can change around the pairs and see if I can get a particular combination working? Thanks again.
peanutz94
Perhaps I can change around the pairs and see if I can get a particular combination working? Thats a possibility..just don't get your hopes up too much. I may or may not work. If it were in a system that would allow you to adjust BIOS settings you may have been able to boost DIMM or memory controller voltage and get them to work. But without those options there may not be anything that would get them to work other than reducing the frequency to the next lowest SPD grade...but that puts you back to the locked BIOS thing again. If the kit vs individual sticks is the case, what are the best options from here? Suck it up and live with 16GB Well, the largest kit Corsair offers for laptops is a 16 gig kit. You could try two of those, but again, that puts you back in the same position as far as mixing kits is concerned... I wisj i could tell you more or give you more options to make them work but thats all I can offer... Sorry!
Stewstews
Thanks for your help on this. I'm going to give it one or two more goes in rotating the sticks. If it fails, I'll have to fallback to 16GB - which I have combinations of that work. I could try for 24GB - but I suspect that would revert to single channel? Hmm decisions decisions - is 24GB single channel better than 16GB dual channel?

It would only run in single channel with just one 8gig module inserted.
