Under Performing RAM

Started having an issue while playing games, about 5 minutes into a game it will start getting choppy like lag, but no lag. Tested everything else except the RAM. cant get Memtest to run from Disc on Boot. Ran PerformanceTest 8.0 and was given overall results of

1093 - which places it about the same as 4GB of Kingston PC2-6400

Yeah not Good, considering its

16GB of DDR 3 XMS 3 PC3-10700H CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9

Have it set in Bios for 1600Mhz 1.55 volts Timing is also correct. Dual channel (4x4) running in Ganged mode

Need some advice on how to go about eaither fixing the issue or determining if its toast and I need to RMA my RAM

If your using the Windows performance index to compare...dont! That number doesn't mean anything. Running a good memory benchmark like superPi or something equivalent will give you a much more accurate representation of your actual memory performance.

At any rate, this sounds like it could be either MB or GPU related more than memory. Have you tested out your GPU on another system?Or can you?

Or do you have a spare GPU to test in your system to see if it follows the GPU.

You might also want to test each stick by itself just to be sure there is not some underlying issue with the memory. I really doubt it because it passed three hours of memtest already, but it's still a slim possibility.

Had it in unganged mode without any difference. And peanut I am using Benchmarking tools from PerformanceTest 8.0 not window indexing. I will try swapping out the GPU and RAM. Pretty sure somehow its the RAM acting up because of all the different benchmarks Ive used rate it fairly low. Just wondering if the MOBO might be having an issue utilizing the RAM.

Did some swapping today. Since I kept getting low RAM numbers on Performance test 8.0 I figured that is where the issue would be first tackled. Pulled out the RAM and put my HTPC RAM in there, all three sticks = 6GB. Ran performance test, came up with same numbers. Then tested it on Counter Strike GO, No problems, played for half an hour with no chugging or lag like symptoms. THen I moved to test with main RAM.

Next I plugged two RAM sticks into slots 1 and 3 on the MOBO. Tested, same number. Played CS GO, no issues.

Tested the other two RAM sticks in slots 1 and 3 on the MOBO. Tested, same number. Played CS GO, no issues.

After that I put two RAM sticks in slots 2 and 4. Tested, same number. Played CS GO, got the choppiness and lag like issues within a few minutes.

Left 1 stick RAM in slot 4 and retested with same numbers. Played CS GO, got the choppiness.

Swapped it over to slot 2, retested, same numbers. Played CS GO, no issues.

So RAM looks okay, just the MOBO RAM slots. Pity, bought the MOBO a month ago, and it didnt even make it a full month before having issues. Going to RMA it, and probably pick up a different brand MOBO.

RAM related, but GIGABYTE issue with MOBO. Sheesh, maybe I should just buy all Corsair and call it good.

Ah cool! I just mentioned that because there are a ton of users who go by windows index score, so thats why I mentioned that.;):

Sorry to hear about the MB but I'm glad you found out where the problem is. Just from the description in your original post I really did not suspect the RAM as being an issue, but there is always that odd ball case where it is.

If you think of it, let us know how you make out after you get the board back.

Good Luck my friend!

Actually considering dumping AMD, since I need a board that I can use while I send in the GIGABYTE for RMA, its almost a 5 week turn around time !!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ive gone through Newegg and Amazon but cant find a decent board to that supports my CPU, Phenom II 6x 1090T. So really just kicking it around if I should ditch out on AMD and go Intel i5 3570k and get an Intel board instead. Pricey but sheesh, I just bought this chip last year and its no longer really viable. AMD pushed it out in favor of the newer FM2 chips that are problematic at best. Cant even find a 6 core on new egg from the phenom II series.

Eh, I think I would rather sell of the Phenom chip I have. Tiger direct is not a fun one to deal with (horrible past experiences) and honestly I wouldnt trust Ebay, the company is evil

Personally I am not one to over clock anything so, pretty much everything is standard. Not sure about what MOBO to chase after though, some of them are like $300 and my wife would kill me. I know the z77 are excellent, just dont know which one is adequate for my usage. Im not a heavy gamer with multiple screens, to put it another way common games I play are things like Counter Strike, Metro 2033 (trying to finish it) Skyrim. I've had MW3 and Farcry 3 since they came out but still havent installed and played them. Yeah I know Im slacking on MW3. Pretty average gaming. Not much application use going on either, web browsing, college stuff, some youtube and movies. Thats about it. I dont think I have ever cranked settings like aniscopic and anti-aisling to max. Yeah I so didnt spell those right.

Just in case....

I plugged the last stick of RAM into slot #4 and put my old video card in and played for an hour solid with no issues... What would cause a problem with the video card and ram like that... Ive never seen a video card problem that only happened when you had RAM in slots

Thats good and bad news. Good news is the GPU is fine, the bad is i believe your original assumption of the MB being bad is correct.

However , just so we can rule evrything out, you might want to boost memory voltage to 1.6 and add .2v to the NB voltage with all slots filled. Give that a shot before you dump the MB . I would hate to see you dump a good board if we have not exhausted all possibilities.

This is why I buy mostly ASUS boards. I have been able to have advanced replacements every time...at least here in the US. I have heard of other people in other countries in the same situation though.

Either way, let me know if those adjustments affect anything.

May not need to test the ram voltage, last night I put htcp ram into slots 2 3 and 4 and tested cs go with 7870. Same bad stutter, so I put regular ram back in and moved 7870 to pci-e slot two. Got much less stuttering in that slot, was near enough to be playable. But the 6870 started acting the same way today as well, so it must be a failing PCI-E slots on the MOBO. right?

OKay so this worked, put in old SSD drive and it had OS on it. Had to remove all traces of amd catalyst and reinstall to get driver working again. played CS GO, no problem, "Thought hmm, this must be failing SSD, rare but it happens"

Plugged back in my Main SSD and removed all trace of AMD Catalyst and reinstalled 13.1 and tested. So far I went for an hour without a single problem. Perhaps this is a case of corrupted drivers.
