thewrongthing
Apologies for the forthcoming noob question: Am I able to flash firmware for a brand new Force Series 3 SSD using my existing PC before I ever install the drive in my new PC? If so, do I need to do anything on the existing PC besides run the installer (e.g. set BIOS)? Thanks.

thewrongthing
Thanks for the reply. I'm running into an issue, though: I have my SSD connected via USB-to-SATA cable, and the installer is not able to locate the drive when it scans. Is there some driver or something that I need to install so that my existing PC recognizes the drive? Thanks.
Wired
Try a different USB port (if you're connecting to a front port, use one on the back, or vice versa).
thewrongthing
Tried other ports, and it appears that Windows recognizes the drive (shows up in Devices and Printers menu), but the Corsair Updater still cannot find it. Are there any other suggestions? Thanks.
madnisman
SSD should be connected to first SATA port running in AHCI mode, hence the updater won't work with USB connection I guess. And you will need to run the upgrade utility as Administrator. If you want to install the SSD in your new PC and don't want to install Win7 first, you can do the following: 1. Either boot from Hiren's Boot CD or boot from Win 7 32bit and run the Repair Console 2. Run the upgrade utility The Repair Console method has been reported as working succesfully by other users. thewrongthing
So then it's practically impossible to flash this firmware with my existing PC?
Toasted
By existing PC, Do you mean your current i7-2600k? Or another one?
thewrongthing
I mean another one, namely my laptop at work. Would the specs from that help?
Toasted
You can give it a go. But it may not be detected as the updater needs AHCI enabled.
madnisman
System specs of your laptop could be helpful, but if I was in your shoes, I would rather perform the upgrade with the new pc.
Yellowbeard
You cannot update SSDs via USB. eSATA will work but only if it's AMD or Intel chipset eSATA, not 3rd party eSATA.
thewrongthing
Thanks for clearing this up, Yellowbeard. I'll wait to update if needed with the new system.
