kman231
I've read a few posts with similar problems to mine but I can't come up with a solid answer. My Force GT 120GB will run fine for an hour or so then crash. It freezes the computer and forces me to a hard restart. When the computer restarts, the drive is not recognized in the BIOS. I have to shut down the computer and wait 10 seconds then startup and change the boot order again. This process is repeated several times a day. Is this a known problem with the SSD or a problem with the Sata 6G controller on my mobo? I haven't tried plugging the SSD into the SATAII ports yet because work has kept me busy. BIOS and Firmware are up to date.
Toasted
-Try a different SATA port -Try a different SATA cable and power connector. If it still does the same submit an RMA.
kman231
After looking at some more posts, I realized that my Gigabyte mobo did not come with the driver for the Marvell controller. I found the driver on the ASUS website and installed it. After 24 hours there have been no issues, however ATTO is showing that I have much slower read/write speeds than advertised. I assume that is a result of the Marvell controller. Not happy with Gigabyte:mad:
kman231
I guess I spoke too soon, hard drive crashed this morning, same issue. Back to the drawing board. I'll try new sata cord and plugging it into the SATAII ports. Does anyone know if SATAIII PCIe cards are worth it? Any particular one that might be better than the Marvell controller? madnisman
AFAIK most PCIe SATA cards are using Marvell controller, the best way to go would be a native Intel controller. Unfortunately, Intel SATA RAID cards are way too expensive (400 USD and above, never saw Intel SATA cards only). If you want to have native Intel SATA, you should think about getting a new mobo (and of course new CPU), this would be cheaper. Regarding your issues: was the Force GT shipped with new 1.3.3 firmware or have you recently upgrade it?
kman231
Looks like it has 1.3.2 still on it. I did try to update it to 1.3.3 though, not sure what happened... Should I try again?
Toasted
When you press rescan drives does it show as 1.3.3?
kman231
Alright here's an update and recommendation for anyone else with similar issues. I performed a secure erase with pmagic, then did a fresh install of windows plugging the SSD into a SATA2 port (SATA3 on my MOBO is a Marvell controller). I then updated firmware to 1.3.3 and then download most recent Marvell driver from ASUS website (Gigabyte doesn't seem to have the driver on their site). I then plugged the SSD into the SATA3 port and all has been working well for about a week now. My advice, use secure erase and follow guides posted in this forumn and follow instructions for updating firmware to a "T".
