G50EED
Any idea if these two will operate together? Any potential harm in experimenting at BIOS default settings (letting motherboard set voltages and timings automatically)?
peanutz94
Yes they will work. Timings and voltages are programed in the module , not the MB. When you first install them they will be running at 1333mhz until you enable XMP to get them to 1866mhz if your CPU will allow an overclock that high. So , no harm in letting them auto detect. They just wont be at 1866mhz if you do.
G50EED
Terrific, thanks. I'm waiting for the Rampage IV Formula to be released which is why I have the RAM sitting around (along with the 3930K). My current board (Rampage III Formula) will not POST with XMP enabled but I have no problem running my current Dominator RAM at 1877 along with the CPU at 4.22 GHz. I don't think it will handle 16GB at that speed though so I will start at 1333 and see if she'll take 1600 and, if so, stop there. I just thought I would get some use out of the RAM while I wait for the new motherboard. Thanks again.
G50EED
I installed all four DIMMs into the motherboard (a supported configuration), set the speed to 1866 (left everything else at defaults – Auto in most instances) and booted into Windows. The DRAM voltage (as reported by CPUID’s Hardware Monitor) was 1.79 volts! What the heck was that? I immediately shut down and set the DRAM voltage to 1.50 manually. The PC wouldn’t POST. So I dropped the speed down to 1600 and everything worked fine. Next I restored my CPU overclock (4.22GHz @ 1.432v) and was able to retain my DRAM speed (actually it’s at 1564 - 156.4 BCLK x 10). So any idea why my voltage was initially set to 1.79 if that’s supposed to be set by the DIMMs themselves? My understanding is that anything over 1.65 can fry the CPU so that was really alarming to me. I am less concerned about not being able to POST at 1866 with 1.50 voltage as I was pretty sure the board/CPU wouldn’t do that with 16GB of RAM anyway. I’m just trying to learn more about how this all works; I’m not complaining or saying anything is a problem. Thanks.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 30, 2011 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 30, 2011 You would need to speak with the MB manufacturer and you can verify what is set in the modules SPD by running CPU-Z and check under the SPD Tab. G50EED
Thanks, RG. The SPD shows correctly (that's the first thing I checked). I'll touch base with ASUS.
Wired
Also, I'd only use 3/4 sticks since that's a triple channel CPU.
