ElcomeSoft
I'm not a huge lover of the Corsair fans which came with my H100 that is currently mounted in the top of my Carbide 500R (fans inside the top section acting as an intake). Since the top mounting has 120mm and 140mm mounting holes I was thinking that I might go for the 140mm fan route and hook things up that way. Without pulling everything out of the case again I can think of a possible issue. Using the screws to keep the 240x120mm radiator in place I'm looking and thinking that they'd get in the way of a 140mm fan operation. In this case, it might be possible to request some (8) rubber fan grommets from Corsair, pop them in the 140mm fan mounts and use the grommets to raise the 140mm fans above the screw heads holding the radiator into place. Thoughts? Has anyone done this? Has Corsair thought about this one? :)
1foxracing
Scythe makes some 140mm fans with 120mm mounting you might want to try. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/10218/fan-662/Scythe_Kaze_Maru_2_Slip_Stream_140mm_x_25mm_Fan_120mm_Mount_-_1200_RPM_SM1425SL12M.html
ElcomeSoft
Thanks for the heads up on that Scythe. Wonder if the difference in fins between that Scythe and the Corsair will make much difference.
1nsane
What you want doesnt work with those fans from Scythe! As you can see the 120mm fans holes are right next to each other! http://www.overclock.net/attachments/computer-cases/226827d1314823676-new-carbide-400r-photos-500r_top_down_open.png As those 140mm fans from Scythe go outside the screwholes perimeter you wont be able to fit more then 1. That's also sort of a bad thing because I'm already quite a fan of that brand.
1nsane
They have normal 140mm dont they?
ElcomeSoft
Not according to their website. The company that use two different shades of brown for their fans have 140mm fans with 120mm mountings but adapters for the normal 140mm holes. However, like the rest of their product lineup, they are hideously overpriced.
Raven0215
I would also Like to know the answer to this question. I just recently ordered this case and the H100 cooler but have not received them. I wanted to use 2 140mm fans as well.

Thought about this quite a bit and found a 140mm fan with 120mm mount holes made by a very well known company. http://www.images.clunk.org.uk/reviews/noctua/noctua%20fans/NF-P14_FLX/IMG_1580.jpg Perhaps these mounts with the Scythe fans could be a solution. Not sure how one would obtain those mounting attachements from. RAM_GUY: Any input into the whole 140mm fan thing with the H100 and 500R combo? ElcomeSoft
This case was made for 120MM Fans and I do not think it would be practical to use 14oMM Fans but it is your case and you can do it how ever you want. If it was made for 120mm fans, why do we have 140mm fan mountings? We have two on the side, two at the top and the back as an exhaust. Without checking I think the fan mounting on the bottom has 140mm mount holes too! Your comment confuses me, RAM GUY.

I'm not sure if I understood your question - looking at the picture in post #4, you want to mount the fans on top of the top section (not underneath as shown in the picture)? In this case, the answer would be yes, I'm using a comparable setup: H100 (inside the case) mounted to 120mm mounting spots with screws from above and 2x140mm fans outside on top of the case. I popped rubber grommets in every mounting hole. But this makes me unhappy and I have a question in turn: is there enough space to mount fans on top of the top section with closed fan grill? I want to mount the Radiator and Fans as recommended, exactly like in the picture in post #4. However I wish to use 140mm fans in the 140mm mounting holes. Mounting the Radiator inside the case would have screws protruding out into the fan cavity at the top. This presents a little issue which I thought might be solved by using the Corsair rubber grommets there to act as a spacer, rather than it's usual role as a vibration dampener. I can visualise it but have no 140mm fans to test it with. I posted in the hope that someone else had any other ideas, could see the flaws in my theory or provide any ideas of improvements... maybe even someone who has already done it before. I've ordered a 500R now, it will arrive on Tuesday. I have 2 140mm fans and enough spare rubber grommets so I will give your idea a try. Will tell you if this works. madnisman
The 500R arrived today, and I spent the whole afternoon and evening with hardware transplantation. I have good news: mounting 140mm fans is absolutely no problem, it works fantastic! Mounted the H100 radiator inside the case, beneath the top section, and both fans on top. The screws that fix the radiator won't protrude into the fan cavity, the frame of the 140mm fan will lie on those screws (used Prolimatech Blue Vortex 14). No need for using rubber grommets for the fans, I don't even see a possibility to pop them into the 140mm screw holes since they are way too small. To fix the fans I used the long fan screws with a short thread, those you need to mount the fans to the HDD cage. If this top section would provide 1 or 2 mm more space in height, then you could even attach Alumino fan filters to the fans (actually you can, but this will bend the mesh cover a little bit... I won't see it but I would KNOW it!). I'm lovin' it! @RAM GUY: I guess this case was made for 120mm and 140mm fans!

I love the case. As for mounting fans in the front, I softmounted mine to the case where the front cutouts are. The case should have pre-installed rubber grommets there. It could reduce the noise levels very slightly as opposed to mounting them on the HDD cage. I've been looking over my choices of fans and decided that the Scythe Gentle Typhoon is probably the one for me. However they're quite expensive so it may have to wait.
