PSU cabling question

So I have just recently finished installing a HX850 into my system and I was curious about something I had discovered...

Upon gutting my computer I wondered If I would be able to leave the cables from my old modular power supply in the case where they were all neatly hidden and zip tied into position or would I have to replace them...first time trying to boot up I used the existing cables and I got power for about a quarter second and then died...and I systematically checked everything in my system until I discovered that the PSU was not happy with my cabling although the ends were IDENTICAL to the corsair ones and I wasn't jamming something into the wrong socket etc. I was just curious was this something to prevent the PSU from burning out due to a warranty or something, and if not is this the only case in which someone has had this happen?
