Just got my replacement from Newegg. It is a 1123

 

THIS DRIVE BLOWS. I'm getting awful speeds in my Macbook Pro.

 

Write: 410

Read: 230

 

I was getting 500/500 with the old drive before I sent it in. WTF CORSAIR? This new drive is AWFUL! i am just so pissed right now

 

I'm going to split your thread off since you have a new replacement drive. Your posts will get lost in that long replacement thread.

Thanks Yellowbeard. I don't know what the problem is. I'm running AJA system test, and it shows REALLY awful, scattered speeds.

 

The write speed seems fine

 

the READ speed is just fuxxing up bad. Goes all the way up to 300 and down to 5 mb/s.

 

I'm not sure what to do...

The Alignment of the drive might be off. Try secure erasing the drive and let us know if the performance improves.

 

Whats the best way to do this on OSX?

 

 

Edit: I launched disk utility with the Snow Leopard DVD inserted and did a 7-pass zero write. Then I re-installed OSX. When I start up it flashes a circle with a horizontal line through it about 2 times before showing the apple logo and booting.

This is what I have after doing a 7-pass of writing zeros to the drive.

Speeds are definitely better, but why does the read drop to ~200mbps every couple of frames or so? That just seems wrong. The old drive did not do that.

here's another run, this time with even lower dips. is this the new firmware at work?

 

Also, when I boot my mac I get a quick flash of a circle with a line through it, like 2 times, and then i see the Apple logo. I never had that before....

I'm sorry nobody responded to your original question, but a 7-pass of writing zeros to an SSD will do nothing, perhaps even more harm than good. In fact an SSD with no data on it has all ones. :D:

 

A secure erase resets the blocks of the drive. It takes literally a second on most SSDs.

 

There are currently no tools available for Macintosh that can secure erase. What you need to do is use Parted Magic, a bootable linux environment. Burn the parted magic .iso to a blank CD and boot from that. Run the partition manager and run the Internal Secure Erase. There are some stickies for it.

 

After you secure erase the drive use parted magic to create the partition, that way you know its aligned. I know the win7 installer is optimized for SSD and aligns them perfectly, but I don't know about Macs or if your previous installation was a backup/image restore, etc. Always better to start fresh if possible. Yes it's more work initially but you get a nice fast product in the end. If you're using it as a periph drive then benchmark it right after partitioning.

 

Making the parted magic CD may be a little bit of a pain but it is a handy asset to have around for any SSD owner or even hard drive maintenance in general. If you have one of those crazy computers with no drives you can use the bootable USB tool and move the .iso file to the tool. Instructions on setting that up are also in the thread.

I finally got parted magic running. Did the DiskErase with the Internal Secure Erase.

 

Parted Magic's SMART status for the drive showed ALL the parameters suffereing from either old age or pre-failure. And this is supposed to be a new drive?

Sorry to double post, but something is really weird. In my OSX "about my system",

 

The drive says that the serial is 1120650000000651**** but the sticker on it clearly a 1123. What is going on with this? YELLOWBEARD? Can you shed some light on this? IS this something that could happen? My system is 3 weeks old so I doubt it is that. Both my old and my new one show different Serial numbers in the OS than the one taped to the drive. Is this a factory problem?

Not bad for a laptop?

 

About the SMART data, I wouldn't necessarily believe it but what is the value of the power-on hours? These values are sometimes read incorrectly since SMART has not been updated for SSD.

I am not saying the speeds are bad, I'm just remarking that the dips are unusual, and did not happen with the first SSD I received. The first one worked PERFECTLY and was running a slightly faster average speed than the second one. It also did not have the random dips in speed that you see up there.

 

I have the drive hooked up and I'm typing from it now, it just seems weird that the new one has worst performance than the one I RMAd

You need to look into the utility with which you are testing. See if it uses compressed data, uncompressed data, or a mix of the 2.

 

I was able to get some better speeds after I did the internal reset again and partitioned with PArted Magic instead of OSX Disk Utility.

Some good news.

 

I left my laptop sitting for about 6-7 hours. I did this in an effort to let the internal garbage collection on the Force Series 3 run. I'm getting much better speeds on the drive now. Check it:

I have no idea how to check. It is called AJA System Test by AJA videos. Mac only.
You should ask the manufacturer of the test. They should be able to explain their test/app to you. If they cannot, then why would you rely on their test to evaluate your hardware??? :confused:

My guess is that OSX does not align the drive properly when creating the partition. We know parted magic does.

 

Certainly after excessive benchmarking as well, the garbage collection and/or TRIM needs idling time to work. Does your system not have TRIM?

nope, no TRIM enabled until 10.7 Lion in a month. There is a TRIM hack but its known to cause problems.
