Buggy F90 detection on Toshiba Tecra A8

Hi.

(And please excuse my english...)

So, I have a problem with a brand new Force 90 firmware 2.0.

I tested it successfully on both a recent Seven 64 (ICH10R with latest intel RST in AHCI mode) and an OLD Dell GX520 (with a OLD ICH7 in ide mode) and it works.

BUT

On the laptop computer (Toshiba Tecra A8), with latest bios (3.40), there is no way to switch between AHCI or Ide mode. I never saw such a bios (only 2 pages with quite no params).

And guess what ? the F90 fails to be detected almost all the time. 'Built-in HDD ERROR', and in setup, there's no HDD.

And one about 20 try, the SSD is detected. And it works. At last until the computer is shutdown.

Of course, there's no detection error with the 7.2K SATA HDD that was previously in it.

Any advice ?

Thanks an advance.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've followed your advice.

But no more LUCK.

SO, we have now a brand new Toshiba Tecra A11, with AHCI support, Core i5, and a Intel ® 5 Series 4 ports SATA AHCI Controler., with Toshiba bundled Intel RST 9.5.0.1037.

the bios is the latest (2.90).

And guess what ? This SSD is not detected correctly. Sometimes it works, sometime it is not detected at all....

Sometimes rebooting one more time allow the SSD to be detected

Sometimes powering it down, waiting a few minutes and then powering it on allow the notebook to detect it.

So, what should I do:

- wait for another FW release, and prey that my CEO will not fire me because he will be unable to use his Computer randomly ?

- stay away from corsair branded drives, return this SSD and buy another brand ?

I am sorry but I think you misunderstood what I stated, I would not suggest using SSD's on any OEM system. And only use them if the OEM offer's SSD's as an option when you purchase the NB. Usually the OEM's I have seen offering SSD's only offer Samsung and Intel SSD's as an option. The latest firmware from us Version 2.0 should not have any problems and I have only seen problems still cropping up with OEM systems which would suggest it may be the reference BIOS they are using may not be optimized for SSD's. We are working with the top MB manufacturers but most OEM's are slow to adopt BIOS updates. And they may not offer an update unless it directly relates to hardware they offer or sell.

I would suggest you show your boss this thread and let him decide what he wants to do. And if he has questions I would encourage him to call in and ask for me I will be happy to speak with him or your self about this.

Yeah this is a problem with laptops and I have seen it a lot on Toshiba laptops. I'm afraid there's nothing you can really do other than wait for a BIOS update from Toshiba. I would recommend using the SSD in a desktop or another computer.

If you still want an SSD for the Toshiba laptop get a Performance series from Corsair and it should not have the bootup problems.

I did replace it with another brand of SandForce based SSD, and guess what ?

No detection problem at all.

Problem solved.

What are you going to destroy next time ?

Corsair was, for me, one of the best QUALITY computer brand.

When you started shipping the CX430 PSUs, I thought 'Ouch nooo, what are you doing ???'.

And we stopped selling Corsair PSU.

And now the SSD detection EPIC fail....

So we stop selling Corsair SSD.

I will stick on Corsair for RAM sticks for the moment.

And Hope I will not be disappointed. Again. :[pouts:

This is not necessarily a problem with Corsair. I use the Force drive personally and I have not had any problems since firmware 2.0. It is some sort of incompatibility especially with Lenovo and Toshiba laptops, they do something strange with their drive detection.

The CX430 was the first "low-end" PSU by Corsair, and for some people marked the beginning of the end for Corsair. The CX430 was not modular, was supposedly "only" 80 Plus (as opposed to Bronze, Silver, etc.), and used a group regulated topology.

I think I picked up 3 of them for free one black Friday and ended up throwing two of them away within the next year.

EDIT: Im not here to bash Corsair, I was just answering the question.

Making a budget PSU is the beginning of the end to some? Others would call it expanding your market base. Either way, I've never seen anyone post "beginning of the end of Corsair" here or anywhere else, but of course I haven't finished reading the internet... (it's on my to-do list) PM me a link of someone saying that please, I'd love to see their logic.

If its not bashing I do not know what you would call it. But did you conatct us in tech support to try and figure out what the problems might be?

In addition, the CPMSU-430CX is ATX 2.3 PSU not ATX 2.03 so many older MB's may not work with this PSU, you would need to be using a mother board manufactured in the last 6-12 months to be compatible. And check for compatibility with the respective MB manufacturer.

Also on your SSD Can you post the lot code off of the drives label that you had that problem with, and you were using Firmware 2.0 correct?

Supports the latest ATX12V v2.3 standard and is backward compatible with ATX12V 2.2 and ATX12V 2.01 systems.
