TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX compatible with Dell Dimension 9200? PC now dead.

Hi,

I've just bought two pairs of 1G memory modules (TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX) to upgrade my Dell Dimension 9200 (also known as XPS 410), but it doesn't seem to work very well. Just one of the modules seems to even get though POST and load BIOS ok.

1st question: is it compatible? I thought I'd been careful with my selection and went for one of the more expensive options due to wanting to be conservative and get nice big heatsinks, but I had no idea this memory stuff was so complicated!

Details from SIW about the factory-installed memory, in case it helps:

Manufacturer Hyundai Electronics

Part Number HYMP564U64BP8-Y5

Serial Number 00001009

Capacity 512 MBytes

Memory Type DDR2 (PC2-5300)

Speed 333 MHz (DDR2 667)

Supported Frequencies 200.0 MHz, 266.7 MHz, 333.3 MHz

Memory Timings 3-3-3-9-12 at 200.0 MHz, at 1.8 volts (CL-RCD-RP-RAS-RC)

Memory Timings 4-4-4-12-16 at 266.7 MHz, at 1.8 volts (CL-RCD-RP-RAS-RC)

Memory Timings 5-5-5-15-20 at 333.3 MHz, at 1.8 volts (CL-RCD-RP-RAS-RC)

Data Width 64 bits

Manufacturing Date 2007, Week 6

EPP SPD Support No

XMP SPD Support No

Everything I have found since having these problems suggest the memory should be OK. Dell even sell it on their site. http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=WEX19&sku=A1262685&~ck=baynoteSearch&baynote_bnrank=11&baynote_irrank=0

2nd question: If it is compatible, what have I screwed up? (please tell me if I should post this part elsewhere). The instructions with the modules say to turn off the PC, but keep the power lead connected (for earth, I assume). Should I have ignored this and disconnected? Have I fried the memory? Happy to go through test results, beep codes if appropriate.

Corsair only lists VS1GB533D2 as being compatible.

Just because Dell sells it doesn't mean it's compatible. The sales site only lists by spec, not by compatibility.

Having said that, TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX runs at pretty tame specs so it should work. Are you trying to run it in the system with the Dell memory still in there?

Thank you Wired!

I've done some more testing:

- I've put the old memory sticks back in the PC and it boots back up to Windows. I didn't fry my motherboard - good news! I have not tried to combine old and new memory.

I've carefully tested each of the Corsair sticks individually in various slots.

- One stick works and boots up to Windows.

- The other sticks either get the Bios beep code 1-3-2 "Memory not being properly identified or used" and diagnostics lights 3 & 4 "Memory modules are detected, but a memory failure has occurred" OR just running fans and nothing else (no or halted BIOS start, 3 & 4 diag lights.

Does this mean that the sticks should be compatible, but three of them are fried or that the one that works is a fluke? Is it worth getting exact replacements from the supplier or should I go with boring old Crucial?

Finally, if I did fry them (or had really bad luck), what is your recommendation as to installation? Keep the power cord connected as per instructions with the memory? I don't want to go through this again.

Many thanks for your help with this!

Tim

Yup.

Not good? The PC is definitely capable of supporting 4x1G. I also know about installing matching pairs, but didn't get far enough for that to be a problem.

Sorry for the slip re another manufacturer's name!

your 32 bit OS wont see all 4 gb of ram just so you know and with 4 sticks you will likely have to downclock them to 667 or maybe even ddr400 speed for even a chance of them working together, mixing 2 sets even with the same part number is not supported or recommended. i would install 3 sticks and reset the bios and see if you can get it to boot.

I am installing the RAM in preparation for upgrading to Win 7 64, so no problem with address space.

Where's the problem with running 4 x 1G modules - Corsair or Dell bios/motherboard? I've read many posts suggesting that the Dell can (unsupported) cope with up to 8G. E.g.: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19257409/19427146.aspx#19427146 and http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/18910391.aspx, so 4G - officially supported - shouldn't be a problem. Can't find any reference to speed limitations, though.

Is there a trade-off between speed and capacity? I haven't seen a way of downclocking the memory on the Dell. It all seems to be automatic. Certainly no options in the BIOS that I have seen.

Thank you,

Tim

Trust me man , you do NOT want to fill all 4 slots at max speed , this is what happened to me : http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=92175

that will pretty much explain the issue with full memory banks

Edit:

its not about the TOTAL capacity of the board , its about the banks (in most cases) it will (again , in MOST cases) tire the Memory Controler of the mainboard.

its highly recommended by alot of people that you DO NOT fill the banks up , or youl end up like me lol.
