H70 cold plate/pump noise

Hi All,

I just finished my system build a few days ago and noticed some unusual sounds coming from the H70 cold plate/pump.

The H70 is push/pull with the fan resistor installed, the fan noise is fine. The CPU is an i7 950 at stock 133.5 x 12, 3.07 Ghz, the IDLE temperatures according to Real Temp 3.60 cores at 40, 36, 39, 36 C, this seems reasonable?

The pump makes a repetitive dull tapping/clicking-like sound at about 10 Hz. Initially, this was fluctuating on and off over the first couple of days, but now the noise is constant and very annoying. The pump sound is louder than all of the fans in my system combined. To me, this just does not seem right?

Also, when the system starts in the morning, I can hear fluid sounds from the pump that last for a minute or two before settling down. It sounds a little bit like gurgling, maybe the fluid is expanding as the system starts and warms up, not sure if this is normal?

I think the H70 should probably be replaced under RMA.

Greatly appreciate any comments on this?

Interesting, after reading through the forum, i tried a couple of things:

Changing the orientation of the radiator did not make any difference.

However, changing the pump power from optional fan to cpu fan has made a huge difference and at this stage seems to have resolved the issue. When the system is starting, the buzzing is there for a few seconds and then goes away.

I also checked ASUS AI Suite II from Windows 7, and fan Xpert looked like it was not set correctly, it is now set to 100% on the assumption that the pump will receive full power.

It has only been half an hour, so I will leave it running for a while longer and report back.

Buzzing is back, should the pump be silent?

pump shouldn't make a noise but sometime's it known a bubbling noise when air get's trapped in the lines but nothing on the lines of buzzing from the pump

Have a word with the RMA department and see what they say... but to me looks like it may need returning

  • 2 weeks later...

"When the system is starting, the buzzing is there for a few seconds and then goes away. "

This "sounds" like some cpu fan speed control behaviour: it starts at full speed, then slows down according to the cpu temperature.

If some extreme quiet option is selected then it may even stop the fan.
