New TX650...HD not powering up/detected.

Dead Tired

Hi, my brother's power supply started throwing out errors on his temp/voltage monitoring software. It was saying his 3.3v was dipping too low, usually when he tried playing games.

I suggested he get a TX650 since he was thinking about getting a new system early next year and could use something beefier than what he had. I helped him pull the old PS out and we dropped in his new one.

The system booted up to bios but said it didn't see a boot device. I noticed it saw the DVD drive but it wouldn't see the HD. We put back in the old PS and everything booted up fine. The system saw the HD and DVD. I shrugged and said we probably didn't have the power cable fully seated originally or have the IDE cable pushed in all the way. We put the TX650 back in and turned everything back on but same deal. CPU/fan starts up, Bios starts up but doesn't see the HD.

I'm going to try the paper clip test when I see him Thursday night but does anybody have any suggestions before I go back over there?

Try resetting the BIOS right off the bat with the TX650 installed. You may also want to test the HDD in a different system to see if it is still detected. If so, then there must be something up with the PSU. I can't explain another reason why the old PSU would let the HDD function normally and then with no other changes other than the PSU the HDD stops getting detected.

Request an RMA

I got stuck at work but I walked my brother through the procedure and he said his case fan did start up. Luckily a guy I work with said he has a Corsair 550 power supply he'll let me borrow. Hopefully that will check out and I'll know it really is a bum power supply.

That should definitely either narrow it down to the PSU or rule it out, let us know how it turns out!
