Display Driver fails when 3rd Dimm installed

My comp shipped with 2 1GB XMS2 dimms installed. I bought a 2GB XMS2 dimm and installed it in the third slot. The computer recognizes the new capacity but my video card fails constantly when im playing games or surfing the web. The error message says, Video display driver failed and recovered. I took out my Nvidia 9600gt and tried my buddies ATI 4650. Does the same thing. Doesn't do it when the 3rd stick is pulled out. Any clues?

Mixing of RAM is never recommended or guaranteed to work per the Corsair Memory Upgrade Guide link in my signature. You are asking two different types of memory modules to play nice together and this may not be possible? You could try manually setting slower RAM timins in the BIOS but this may not work.

Thats funny. My friends say they match different capacity dimms from the same manufacturer all the time. I read on many internet forums,(outside of this one), where people were doing the same thing with no problems. I guess its just my luck! Im gonna buy the TWIN2X4096-6400C5 kit I guess and see if the extra 2GB dimm will work in the third slot with them! :sigh!:

Some times people are able to mix and match but there are no guarantees because you're asking the mobo to run different RAM chips with different physical properties. The faster the RAM frequency or the greater the RAM quantity the more difficult the task for the memory controller and mobo to function without errors.
