What memory should I choose?

Hello Corsair support.

I have a simply question for you.

I've followed your Memory Configurator Link and I have received the following memory recommendations

to use with my Gigabyte EP45T Extreme motherboard:

CMX8GX3M4B1333C9 DDR3-1333 (XMS3-10600C9*8GB) 8GB Kit (4 x 2GB) 1.5v 9-9-9-24-2T

CMV4GX3M1A1333C9 DDR3-1333 (VS-1333C9*2CH) 4GB 1.5v 9-9-9-24-2T

CMP4GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3-1600 (Dominator-12800C9*4GB) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.65v 9-9-9-24-2T

CMP4GX3M2A1600C8 DDR3-1600 (Dominator-12800C8*4GB) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.65v 8-8-8-24-2T

TW3X4G1333C9DHX DDR3-1333 (XMS3-10600C9) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.5v 9-9-9-24-2T

However over year and a half ago as a recommended Corsair memory to use with my motherboard was listed:

TW3X4G1600C9DHX DDR3-1600 (XMS3-1600*4GB) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.80v 9-9-9-24-2T

Single Dimm identification is: CM3X2G1600C9DHX

So I bought a pair of 4GB. Now, I would like to add another 4GB or 8GB more to my motherboard but I'm noticing

your Memory Configurator does not list the Corsair memory I bought as compatible any longer, something I would

argue seems pretty extrange cause that's the memory I'm currently using.

However, since I would like to buy Corsair again, and taking into consideration that your "new" recommended

memory dimms voltage is no longer 1.80v but 1.5 or 1.65 do you think that I could buy and install a pair of the

TW3X4G1333C9DHX (not available anywhere and aparently extremelly pricey for whatever reason) or can I go

with the less expensive and readily available:

Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 4GB DDR3 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 9-9-9-24 Core i5 Dual Channel Memory Kit?

Yeap, I know it's not listed as compatible above... reason why I'm apelling to your expertise in the matter.

Any other recommendation you might also suggest would be extremely welcome as well.

Thank you very much.

A Corsair Customer.

Hey thx again for replying... so I can understand this...

by "Not that it's not compatible" you mean that "CMX4GX3M2A1600C9" is not compatible with my motherboard... but.. "Either way there's no way to guarantee compatibility between any 2 kits. " so I can take a chance and try it out?

Also... when you say "I believe the part # was changed, that's all." you mean that the part number for "TW3X4G1600C9DHX"(old memory) was replaced by "TW3X4G1333C9DHX" if that's the case.. any idea if still on production? why is so hard to find? any place where to get it in Canada?

So in your opinion I'm better off trashing the Corsair memory I have installed right now and go buy 4 new dimms? Not necesarily Corsair, but at least I know they should work for sure?

Thanks a lot again.

No, I was talking about TW3X4G1600C9DHX. It wasn't replaced by TW3X4G1333C9DHX as they were around at the same time (not to mention they're entirely different speeds). The part numbers all changed to similar to what the others look like. This thread explains how to read the new part numbers.

To be sure RAM will function properly, you should purchase ONE tested, matched kit compatible with your CPU/platform as mixing even of the same modules rarely works without issues. You may be able to sell your current RAM to ofset the cost of a new proper matched RAM kit?

Thanks both for answering, just wondering... out of the pack above pair do you think should "talk" better to the pair I have?

CMX8GX3M4B1333C9 DDR3-1333 (XMS3-10600C9*8GB) 8GB Kit (4 x 2GB) 1.5v 9-9-9-24-2T

CMV4GX3M1A1333C9 DDR3-1333 (VS-1333C9*2CH) 4GB 1.5v 9-9-9-24-2T

CMP4GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3-1600 (Dominator-12800C9*4GB) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.65v 9-9-9-24-2T

CMP4GX3M2A1600C8 DDR3-1600 (Dominator-12800C8*4GB) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.65v 8-8-8-24-2T

TW3X4G1333C9DHX DDR3-1333 (XMS3-10600C9) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.5v 9-9-9-24-2T

I'm thinking about this one = CMP4GX3M2A1600C9 DDR3-1600 (Dominator-12800C9*4GB) 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) 1.65v 9-9-9-24-2T

but I would appreciatte your opinion guys.

Thx a lot.

PS: I forgot to mention I don't do any OC.. would that simplify my life?

There is absolutely NO way to answer that question. Even if you had the exact same part it couldn't be answered. There's 9 different ICs used for each part number, and even if you got memory with the same IC there's no guarantee as to compatibility. Sure, it would help, but there's much more to the testing than just matching up ICs.

Hi there again,

but what you are saying it's that even if I forget about my memory and I want to buy 8gb new, let say I choose the "new recommended" memory for my motherboard:

Corsair XMS3 CMP4GX3M2A1600C9 Dominator 4GB DDR3 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 9-9-9-24 Memory Kit, and since I want 8gb I'll have to buy 2 pairs since it just comes in pairs.. according to what you are saying... 1 pair might not work with the other???

May be I'm not understanding this right, but if I'm it's insane... what happened to the old good times when I could just mix any kind of 30 pins 8mb dram simms into a motherboard and forget about it?

Moreover, the EPT45 motherboard supports upto 16gb .. how can you reach that if you can't be sure if 2 pairs even from the same type will work together or not??

To be certain that the RAM will work without issues you need to purchase ONE, tested, matched, compatible RAM kit for your CPU/mobo. There are numerous 8 GB. DDR3 RAM kits available for Intel CPUs. The link below shows one specific 8 MB. RAM kit (CMX8GX3M4B1333C9), confirmed to work with your mobo though other Corsair DDR3 Intel compatible 8 GB. RAM kits will also likely work for you.

You're right, it was about 12 years ago that you could reliably mix memory, all pre-SDRAM.

Get one 16 GB kit in that scenario. That way the testing has already been done for you.
