Scoop007
Hi, I recently upgraded from a hx850 to ax1200. Part of my research into a new psu involved how loud the psu was. According to your charts my ax1200 should have around the same if not quieter sound levels than my hx850. This is not the case. As soon as i turned my pc on it was noticeable straight away that this psu is louder. I have a watercooled pc with fans at 600rpm and so it is very easy to notice the difference in noise this psu makes. The noise is not the coil whine i have read about, it is just a louder fan than the hx850. Also there is a very high pitch sound being emmited. Very like the sound some old tvs gave out. This is very annoying. A few people i know cant hear it and a few can. I have tried plugging the psu into its own socket, this did not fix the problem. I was wondering if this is the reality, or have a got a faulty psu? Phil.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 24, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 24, 2010 Definitely sounds like it is louder than it should be, lets get it replaced! Request an RMA
Scoop007
Hi, I put in for a rma but contacted the retailer i bought from instead. I returned the psu and got a refund. I then bought the ax1200 again from a different place. This new psu fan definitely seems a bit quieter, but the faint piercing highpitched sound is still being emitted. The same one i described with my first ax1200 that sounds like the high pitched sound emitted by old crt tv's. Im not sure what is causing it, it may be the fan. Also this psu makes noise for about 20 mins after the pc is shutdown. My first louder ax1200 did not do this. I am now confused to how this psu is really supposed to perform. Both my first and second (although my second overall being best) displayed pros and cons. Both emitted highpitch sound (not the squeeling coil whine). My first had a louder fan, my second making noise even when switched off. Phil.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 21, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 21, 2010 How loud are the noises with the new one? How far away do you need to be from the system before you can not hear it? Is the fan spinning on the PSU after the system is shut down?
Scoop007
I am currently sitting 3-4 meters away from the system and cannot sit any further away to see when i cant hear it. It is one of those noises that isnt very loud, just very noticeable. It sounds just as loud whether im 1m away or 4m. I am not sure about the fan after the system is shutdown, i cant check till later. Im pretty sure it isnt spinning after shutdown as i remember i put my ear to it when i was hearing an electrical buzz after the pc was shutdown. However i can live with this as i cant hear it during normal use. Its just the highpitch hum that is a bit annoying. Thanks for replies, Phil. Scoop007
i checked and the fan is not still running after shutdown. The noise emitted after shutdown sounds like a chirping noise. This was not present on the first psu, or if it was it was to quiet to hear from where i usualy sit. But as i said earlier, i can live with this. I am thinking the annoying high pitched sound that is present on both ax1200 i have used is coming from the fan. Is it possible for me to fit a different one? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 27, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 27, 2010 It is definitely possible to swap the fan, but this would void the warranty with the unit. If you like we can try replacing it once more for you. You may also want to test the unit in a different system if possible, just to make sure that the noise follows the PSU and is not caused by the PSU reacting to some other component in the system. xelnaga15
I'm having this exact same problem. I had an HX1000 in the system (quiet as it could be) and decided to switch to the AX1200 after reading up on it on the Corsair website and seeing various review videos that gave it flying colors. It arrived on friday and I spent all weekend swapping out the modular cables because they apparently do not match the HX1000s cables. he describes the sound spot on. if you are in the room you can hear this ... whine..... this high pitch "eeeeeeeeeeeeeee". Exactly the same sound i hear from very OLD CRT tube TVs. Its not really louder if you are close or on the other side of the room. The noise occurs from the instant you power on the system and seems to constantly produce the sound regardless of system load. but it is VERY ANNOYING Is this normal for the AX1200? is this a fault in the manufacturing? BigRigDriver
This is a common problem with cheap capacitors that are used in the manufacturing proccess of this particular power supply. Also, the coils are not shielded properly to eliminate this annoying sound, the reviews online might give this unit high marks, but the fact still in place that the manufacturer could have used better components to built this product. I own many Corsair products, but I wont be purchasing this unit based on user reviews of the noise that is associated with this particular power supply. JohnPPR
I also have the same problem along with coil buzz/whine and find that high pitch noise even more annoying than the buzz. I am about to RMA my AX1200. If it's not going to solve the high pitch noise issues, I might as well save the time from RMA and sell the psu to someone who can't hear it. Is this problem resolved with RMA?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 26, 2011 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 26, 2011 The AX1200 should not be buzzing or whining loud enough to be audibly bothersome, if it is, then we can try replacing it for you. I would first check this thread to see if any of the suggestions there help reduce the noise, but if there is no change then lets get the unit replaced! What is the source for this information? The AX series is our flagship PSU and I find it unlikely that a 80 Plus Gold PSU could acheive that rating if it were using shoddy capacitors. There are many reasons that a PSU may buzz or whine, and it can definitely be caused by the PSU itself, however it could also be cuased my many other factors, so replacing the PSU does not always resolve the problem. Just as an example, I have talked to at least two people who after replacing the PSU multiple times and still having problems finally unplugged all the other devices from the circuit in their home (which the PSU was plugged into) and got the buzzing to disappear. For one, there was a lamp with a dimmer switch which was causing the problem, and for the other it was a refrigerator. High efficiency PSUs tend to be more sensitive to the incoming power from the wall outlet, and some devices or even just old wiring in a home, can have an effect the power being delivered to the PSU. elbeasto
I'm getting the same exact high pitched eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee... Sometimes it fades for a second but then comes back. It is not loud, the fan is though but it is the high pitch that makes it so audible over everything else & yes, it is VERY ANNOYING. My HX 1000 was dead silent, I could hear it only if my ear was 1cm away from it, I can hear this damn thing across the room. I'm returning mine tomorrow, I thought I could live with it but I can't. I'm surprised that it's a Corsair but there ya go.
