Sartori
Hello Am thinking about getting an SSD for my wifes Laptop. Its a Dell Studio 15 running Vista 64. Its got a 7200 rpm 250 gig drive with 90 used.... Was looking at the SSD's on the site but man, theres so many different models.....don't really have a clue which one I should get. How come so many? Around 180 gigs should be okay as the only thing she puts on it now is pictures which can be taken off for room... Thanks for any guidance! Wired
Get a drive from the Performance series. Best compatibility for OEM systems: http://www.corsair.com/products/ssd_performance/default.aspx
Sartori
Get a drive from the Performance series. Best compatibility for OEM systems: http://www.corsair.com/products/ssd_performance/default.aspx Okay was reading up on those a little but sounds like TRIM is only available on a Windows 7 platform. So what happens over time if your using Vista?
Wired
They'll ultimately get slower unless you wipe the drive (PROPERLY) from time to time.

Okay, so how do you wipe the drive properly? The more I investigate these drives the more complicated it gets to keep them in full performance....If its going to be that much trouble we might have to pass..... Wired
Check the stickies, but ultimately for ease of use I'd either upgrade to Windows 7 or hold off on an SSD purchase until you do get Windows 7.

Yes, looks like thats a good idea alright....I'd be sleeping outside with the dog if anything happened to my wifes laptop:) It sure is misconceiving though, they make it look and sound easy for the upgrade on paper but when you get down too it, its not that easy..... Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 19, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 19, 2010 I would just get one of our Performance Series SSD drives for that system and the Garbage Collection should not have any problems maintaining the drive. Or you can use Diskeeper Professional with HyperFast will work great as well.

Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 19, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 19, 2010 Garbage Collection in embedded in the firmware so it works at the controller level. While Diskeeper Professional is software that will maintain the free space for you automatically. But yes they will work in unison.
