Tony_L
Do the corsair range of psus have the ability to hotplug sata hard drives? ie: should I be able to plug in a sata hdd to the sata power while the machine is running and have stable enough rails for the machine to stay up? Thanks, Tony HX850, HX620, HX650, VX550 are what I have
Synbios
I didn't know the PSU affected hotplug. As long as you have SATA drives with AHCI enabled in BIOS you should be able to hotplug, at least I always have. MAKE SURE AHCI is enabled if you're hotplugging in the OS. I've hotplugged using a HX850 before, just to testify.
Tony_L
last time i plugged a hdd in (just power) with a molex>sata the system froze and blue screened, same thing with my Lian-li hotswap bay (also molex though) Yet to try with a actual sata power
danxmanly
If your system shuts down just due to the little extra current a hard drive pulls, then you need a bigger supply. ;-) Hot pluggin' a sata drive has more to do with how you have the sata port set up, than the power connection. Make sure you have it properly configured in your bios and you should be fine on most of the newer boards. I have an old Pentium 4 I use in my bedroom for mainly music and for the life of me I can never get it to hot swap a sata drive. But anything within the last 4 years shouldn't be an issue.
