froodawg
Recently purchased a brand new corsair 950tx power supply and I have some reservations. I've noticed a distinct odor similar to the odor of super glue coming from the unit. One corner looks to have been visibly glued shut. A chalky, yellowish compound can be seen beneath the intake fan. I have yet to install this into my build, and the unit came packaged like new. My question is this: Should I even attempt powering this unit on, or should I ask the retailer for a replacement? Is it standard policy for corsair quality control to ship units like this?
va1erian
Can you post a picture ? If the gooish mass prevents the fan from rotating, then this is defect. Otherwise, how can you claim the unit is defective if you have not turned it on yet ?
froodawg
The chalky, yellowish compound looks like dried up silly putty that's been dropped onto the circuit board. I would post pictures if my phone's camera were able to show it in detail. I don't recall stating that the unit was defective, I was looking for an opinion of someone who can attest to the build quality of the 950tx - does my description sound abnormal? I don't have any replacement power supplies sitting around and since it's taking two weeks for a retailer to deliver the remainder of my build I'd rather not waste time troubleshooting a suspicious product within my return policy. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 3, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 3, 2010 Most likely what you are describing is heat sink compound and if so nothing to worry about but please yes post a picture.
froodawg
My impatience got the best of me, so I tried the paper clip test. Fans spun up. I did hear a faint, high-pitched whine after shutting off & unplugging for a period of about 20 seconds. Installed it in the case tonight, will finish the build tomorrow. Wish me luck.
