TX650 issues - rebooting itself

Hi,

I built a new system about 9 months ago with a tx650 psu.

It's been working fine until a couple of days ago, when the computer randomly shut off and started up again. I assumed at the time it was probably just a quick power cut or something, and thought nothing of it, but again that evening there was a popping noise and it went off, seemed to try to boot up again but couldn't, the fans and lights just flashed on for a moment then went back off.

I unplugged everything and opened up the case - I found the psu was very hot to the touch, and there was a slight burning smell coming from the rear vent.

I let it cool off for the night and in the morning I disconnected all my HDDs, gpu etc, and booted into the bios - the temperature of my cpu was normal, but the psu was still getting very hot, and within an hour of sitting in the bios it shut off again with the same pop and burning smell as before.

The psu was powering a core i5, 4890, 3x7200rpm hdds, and 2x2gb ddr3 ram, which to my knowledge should easily be handled by a 650tx.

I requested an RMA yesterday morning (I'm in Ireland) using the online form, but I haven't gotten a reply back yet, so I figured it couldn't hurt to make a post here and get some input on the problem,

Thanks

Did you mention that a Corsair technical support person already had a look at your problem and recommended to RMA it ? I believe in such a case they will issue you the number without delay. It occurs to me now they have put you in a queue for a technical support person to contact you and find out if your case warrants RMA. From reading this forum, I know that if you describe your problem in here and a support person tells you to do RMA, then you can mark in your RMA application that your case was already attended.

What was the case number and I will get it approved for you?

The case number was 1730037, but it has been approved now, thanks :)

However I have since gotten the return postage priced, and I'm thinking I may be as well off buying a new psu! It costs half the price of a new one as it is :(, and on top of that there is no guarantee it will be replaced - I'm concerned about the package being torn up/damaged in an airport search what with the recent cargo plane bomb in the UK, which of course could result in me being denied a replacement.

For me, shipping the PSU (same as your PSU) to the US would cost more than the price of the new PSU !

Sorry to hear that, but unfortunately there is not much I could do about that. I would suggest contacting our customer service directly at 888-222-4346 and dial "0", (510) 657-8747 or email rmaservice@corsairmemory.com to see if there are any alternative RMA options available.
