ToFFo
Hi all. I really am in doubt here. There seems to be coming a whiny noise from my PSU. Or rather, from the plug where i plug-in the power cord on the PSU. Sometimes it just goes away for no apparent reason. But its mostly when harddrives are loading something it starts to get noisy. Not noisy as in loud. But its a high pitch sound thats hard to describe. A whining grasshopper or something i don't really know. But i bought the AX850 to get a silent system and all i hear is that damn whiny noise. I'm not sure if its coilwhine or not. I have checked out numerous Youtube videos that show coilwhine on several AX PSU's. I just installed the PSU yesterday, and i am rather disappointed about this. I'm not even pushing the PSU! The fan doesnt even spin because it runs so cool. So question is. Is this due to the PSU or the power thats coming into the PSU from the power cord? I did not have this problem with my old Tt toughpower 750w. I already filled out an RMA case. But now i am in doubt wether its coilwhine or not. I don't want to waste the Corsair workers' time if theres nothing wrong with the PSU. Also, If i am to RMA this PSU, i will be without a PSU for an unknown period of times. Which is probably several days. Since i have to send it outside the country for RMA. And i JUST bought it! Not the quality i expected for such an expensive product. va1erian
Use a paper tube to listen and elucidate the exact source of whine. It may be the PSU or even something else. (I also have a coil whine. At first I have identified the source to be the PSU, but over a couple of weeks, the symptoms have developed, and it is now the videocard which whines not PSU.) Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 28, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 28, 2010 http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=85166 Try some of the things in this thread to see if you can isolate where the problem is coming from. If the PSU looks to be the likely cause of the problem then Request an RMA. Once you get the RMA number, please contact our customer service at 888-222-4346 and dial "0", (510) 657-8747 or email rmaservice@corsairmemory.com to see what options may be available for the RMA. ToFFo
I'll find a paper tube or something and listen for it when it's annoying. Its coming and going. Sometimes its really annoying and sometimes its barely audible. But from what i can hear with my naked ear, the sound comes from where the power cord is plugged into the PSU. Not from inside the PSU itself so to speak. The cord is tightly secured and shouldn't be a loose connection. I also tried switching 220v power cables. I fear that it might have something to do with overcurrents. But I'm not sure. I will investigate further and keep you guys posted. Thanks alot for the tips thus far :)
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 28, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 28, 2010 You might try plugging it in directly to the wall to see if the noise could have anything to do with a surge protector/powerstrip. Also, see if you can duplicate the same problem while running in safe mode or idling in the BIOS, this should help rule out any type of software related cause and tell us that its definitely a hardware issue. ToFFo
Gonna do that tomorrow. But it also has the noise in BIOS. Right now there is no noise at all. My computer has been on for about 10 hours now. For some reason or other the whining stops after a few hours. But then begins again at some random time. It's really weird. But I'm beginning to suspect an overcurrent from the household. Thank god i didn't send in the unit just yet! Will return with results tomorrow! slimbrady
If you bought it at a retail store somewhere just get it exchanged there...say the rail voltage wasn't stable or something =) Nobody's time but yours is wasted doing it that way, lol. ToFFo
The PSU stopped being noisy. For some reason or other. We just had a MASSIVE power surge in my town today. The whole town was completely without any electricity! It was out for about an hour or so. And now the PSU is really quiet for some reason. If the sound reappears I will update this thread. Thank you for your suggestions though! @Slimbrady - Well if i send it in they will run diagnostics on it to see wether there is something wrong with it or not. If theres nothing wrong with it i will have to pay for the work time they use on it. Thats a waste of at least 50 bucks. I'm gonna keep it for now. If the problem reappears i will just update the thread.
