AX1200 Coil buzz

Pyrophoric

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I made a post here a few days ago noting that I didn't have this problem. Seems the problem has manifested itself as of yesterday and will no stop unless C1E and Speedstep are off.

What specifically in the power supply causes this noise and how can I hope that a replacement will fix the problem?

It is still under the return policy through Newegg and they are offering to cross ship so I am going to choose that route only if I feel confident that it will take care of the problem. Currently, I see many people get replacements only to have the same issue.

If turning off the power saving features in the BIOS resolves the problem then the problem could be with voltage regulation on the motherboard, or a BIOS issue. The PSU does not change the way it operates when these settings are disabled, however the voltage regulation on the board does. To be sure, I would test the PSU in a different system, and if you still have problems in a different system then I would suggest getting the PSU replaced. If another system does not have the same problems, then the chances are that its BIOS or mobo related. Make sure you have the latest BIOS for the board, and if there is no improvement, then you may want to contact the mobo maker and see if they can help isolate the problem.

At any time if you would like to try replacing the PSU, please Request an RMA.

  • 3 weeks later...

My problem manifests in 3 different computers all with completely different components with C1E and Speedstep.

I have been mulling around the idea of trying those features to save a little power from time to time, especially when I forget to turn the computer off. The coil whine has become extremely loud with those features on though.

I want to setup an RMA but am wondering how likely it is that it will fix the problem. This is actually a replacement AX1200, Amazon sent it overnight when I was still in the 30 days. Both PSU's had the problem in all rigs.

In all my computers I have Corsair PSU and have come to trust them and would really not want to have to go with another brand, especially as it would be more $$$ out of my pocket, unless I received a refund from Corsair, which I am not interested in at this time.

I am just leery of sending my product in and getting yet another with the same whine or worse, DOA or other problems. I have seen a few posts here and in reviews across the web where their RMA had the same problem.

Any further suggestions here?

Overall the whining issue has been very limited with the AX1200, we made some internal changes after the first batch was released, and resolved a potential issue which may have been causing these units to buzz. If you do an RMA directly through Corsair you should get a brand new unit without any buzz.

I bought a AX1200 from newegg last week, how can I tell if I have the updated version or not? It's for a future build so I haven't opened it yet.

If you purchased it last week, then its the newer version, it was only the first batch of units that would be prone to buzz, and even then it was a small percentage of them.
