WilliamS
1- My ATX case has a space on the back for a fan, but it is for ~77 mm. There is just no space for the 120 mm fan, unless I drill many holes in the top or bottom. So I'm guessing the top is preferred? There is presently only 7 mm clearance at the bottom. 2- Is the adhesive backing really needed for the AMD AM3 backplate?
Yellowbeard
1. You will have to decide how to mod your case as your hardware configuration is unique. 2. It is not required. It is there to help hold the plate in place while installing the cooler.

WilliamS
I scroogled "how to make a hole in ATX case" then got a jigsaw. There was just enough room in the top.
