noisy Vx550???

I’ve used my Corsair PSU (VX-550) for the last 3-4 years and overall I’ve been very happy with it. It was used in my main desktop which for over a year now I use as my HTPC in the basement, where furnace and projector fans take over the noise levels. Yesterday I’ve decided to swap Corsair PSU and put it in my main machine to replace failing Antec SmartPower PSU (+5Vsb rail is going). To my surprise the Corsair PSU is very noisy and I don’t remember being that noisy when I used it in my HTPC as main machine. It is much nosier than Antec PSU… Also at one point yesterday after shutting down system, all drives/fans where shutdown, however there the PSU was still going. BTW.. my computer is going through UPS (cyberpower) and cyberpower software reports my system uses about 150W at idle… so I’m sure PSU is not being overloaded. I don’t play any games on that PC and use IGP8200 (on-board video)…

I’m planning to take PSU out of my case to see if the problem would still happen. Also I’ll test all the voltages using my DMM… Are there any other tests/things I should try before going RMA route…?

TIA

I just tested the unit VX550W outside my case. The same noise persists. To me it sounds like a very low whinny fan noise, but it is possible something else is buzzing. The fan kicks in right after power is applied. I thought the fan was only kicking in under load. Right from the start there is low warm air coming on the back from the unit. I’m not an expert but perhaps the fan controller is faulty? My system runs 24/7 and I don’t want to risk of a fire.... :-(

The unit was bought in Dec 2007 in Canada (I have the receipt for it), so they unit should be under 5 years warranty.

Based on my limited info do you guys think is the unit qualifying for RMA?

How does it work? do I only have to pay for one way shipping? And is there extra for Advanced RMA?

Where do I have sent my unit? I’m located in Canada. In the past I did end up paying extra customs fees, because XFX screwed up customs paper work for the warranty replacement for a faulty 8800GT (lifetime warranty). I would like to avoid this if I can.

Also I have 2 lines connectors cut of at ends of lines (one SATA and one floppy connectors), to fit better my case. Both ends were properly secured with a good electrical tape to prevent any possible circuit shorting. Will this void warranty?

Anything else I should do or try? Just out of curiosity, could I just replace fan in the PSU myself? And if yes what fan is recommend?. Since I have warranty I would like to leave this as my last resource…

Thanks.

I would suggest that you Request an RMA, and once you get the RMA number, please contact our customer service at 888-222-4346 and dial "0", (510) 657-8747 or email rmaservice@corsairmemory.com. They should be able to tell you whether or not the unit can be replaced through our warranty, and they should also be able to give you detailed RMA information to answer your other questions.
