A50 question...size question

Hello.

 

I am considering the A50 for my new build.

I have a AMD 945 3.0ghz quad CPU.

ASRock 870 Extreme3 mobo.

4gigs DDR3 1600 memory.

 

What I like about this heatsink is that it basically just "clips" onto the existing AMD retention modules on the mobo. How great is that.

 

My question and concern I have though is, will this potentially cover one of my DIMM slots due to its size? I have 4 DIMM slots, 2 in use, but I plan to fill the remaining 2 DIMM slots in about a month to give me 8gigs memory.

 

Oh ya, when looking at measurements, which would be the measurement I would want to pay attention to in regards to extending close to the DIMM slots?

 

So that is my question.

It's very close but will depend mainly upon 2 things.

 

1. The distance from the CPU slot to the first memory slot.

 

2. Then, the height of your memory modules.

 

If you don't use overly tall memory modules, you should not have an issue.

Are you able to get any type of indication in regards to the distance from CPU to memory slot?

 

I have some GSkill ram that has a little bit tall modules on them:

It's really hard to say based on the pictures. My best guess is "probably".

One thing I was looking at was your install guard (.pdf in the sticky above).

 

Looking at the AMD manual, the picture where you lock the clip down, to the left in that picture is the DIMM slots. Looking at that, it looks like I should have clearance.

 

As I get more information and look around, can the heatsink be mounted only a certain direction? Also, do I have flexibility in mounting the fan? Meaning, can I move it up a tad when it is clamped onto the heatsink?

EDIT: Just wondering if I should look at the H50 or H70.

I was looking through the docs and watched the videos of installing the H50 and H70. I did not see anything AMD specific. Any guides for that? Like to see something for that.

Only thing I am nervous about is how long one of these would last. Would like at a minimum, 3 years.
