bigwater
This setup has been runing rock solid for a couple of months now using stock default BIOS settings. It was never even turned off... ran 24/7 the whole time other than powering itself into sleep mode after inactivity. I decided that just for grins I'd throw another 4GB of RAM at it to bring it up to 12GB. I bought another identical kit of memory and installed the additional two DIMMs. It started acting up quickly. Random reboots with no BSOD, just BAM, black screen, then a reboot. When I say random, I mean it could run for two days, or it could run for ten minutes, or it could not even get to the Windows boot screen for several cycles. I've tweaked the BIOS every day to Sunday trying to get this system stable with 12GB of that particular RAM in it, but I just can't get it to work. If I drop it back down to 8 GB, it runs fine. It ran MemtestX86+ for 48 hours straight with no errors and all 12GB recognized, and will run fine with any combination of four of the six sticks I have, so I'm sure the RAM isn't bad. I'd like to see if anybody has gotten this combo working before, and if so, what the heck do I need to do to get this system stable. I hate to shelve this stuff and go out and buy two of the tested compatable 6GB kits, in fact I don't think the wife would smile at me if I did, so I may just be stuck with 8GB running on the system and 4GB collecting dust on a shelf if I can't get a solution. Synthohol
mixing 2 kits of ram (especially 3!!) even the same part# is not suggested or recommended by Corsair, all sticks you plan to use must come in ONE package in order to be supported at full speed. HX3X12G1600C9, HX3X12G1333C9 or CMD12GX3M6A1600C8 are the only 12Gb kits certified for your exact board, mixing 2 kits is asking for trouble. /edit] http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMD12GX3M6A1600C8-Dominator-PC3-12800-1600Mhz/dp/B002QSHG7O 378.00-430.00 for a perfect matched set. bigwater
Well, I understand the basic concepts of what you are saying, but I've got three kits of the same memory... TW3X4G1333C9A G... all from the same batch 10301103. My vendor had to find a set from the same batch and assured me it would work. All of the information matches 100% dimm for dimm inside MemTest86+, and that proggy runs forever without fail. I'm strongly suspecting that this is an issue with Win 7 Pro 64 bit and not the compatability of the RAM with the board... but I can't be certain. The three kits seem to run stable until I try to load Win 7. I guess I'm going to have to try to RMA the RAM and get a single kit... but I don't want the battle if I can avoid it. As I've asked previously, has anybody made three identical kits of this ram work in this mobo?
bigwater
All is good. Today I called the vendor and spoke with the sales consultant and explained the situation, that he had recommended RAM that wasn't even on ASUS' HCL. Even though it was past their exchange date, they agreed to take it back and swap it for a 12GB kit that was on the HCL for the board (Corsair memory of course). They're even paying shipping both ways. Lesson learned... research things yourself and don't rely on a sales consultent to recomend parts for you. Synthohol
yeah i depend on the individual mfg's of the components to say what they fit not what fits them:): im super glad they are willing to swap with ya, that's actually outstanding customer service!! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted September 28, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted September 28, 2010 Mixing kits is never guaranteed and even though they may have all the same specs they may not run together. If possible you may want to check with the retailer if they will replace it with a 12GB kit.

I've depended on this vendor's customer rep (not named due to forum rules) for quite a while now. In the beginning I researched everything thoroughly and made sure it was all compatable, but over time the rep would make suggestions that actually turned out to be better than what I had selected for a build, and eventually I let my guard down and just started giving him hen scratches of what I needed and let him put the parts list together. This was the first and only time he led me down the wrong road, but I'm back to researching things myself. At least he made it right though... he's still my "go to guy" for parts, although I'll be selecting them myself from now on.

Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted September 29, 2010 Corsair Employees Share Posted September 29, 2010 At least he made it right though... he's still my "go to guy" for parts, although I'll be selecting them myself from now on. Actually I would not put to much of this on him, as its hard in his position knowing every part and after all we are all human and subject to mistakes. But he has proven to stand behind what he sells and would be a great person for anyone to deal with from the sounds of things. And Kudos off to him, and for the record I do not mind you posting their information, I firmly believe when someone has done a good job they should be rewarded and it sounds as this reseller has gone above and beyond to make you a happy customer. At least post the company name so others may know who is a responsible reseller.
bigwater
Well, I don't want to inundate my particular sales rep with 10,000 phone calls, but since the boss here says to spill the beans, the company is TigerDirectB2B.com. It's the business to buisness arm of TigerDirect.com. You need to do about 10 grand or more a year with them to gain any pricing advantage from the site, but anybody can set up an account with them and buy stuff for the same price you can get it from on the regular site... plus you get a personal sales consultant who will research things for you and help you work through any issuses you may have. If you don't do the required purchase volume you usually won't get much if any difference in pricing than you get from the regular site, but the service is superior by leaps and bounds over the regular TigerDirect.com... which is good in it's own right. Synthohol
TigerDirectB2B.com +1 i havent used them in a couple years because i dont work for the company that has an account with them anymore but for the time that i did, i totally agree about the service. i even got heads ups about products not on the market yet. glad to see they still work with you as great as you have told here. bigwater
I neglected to mention that B2B not only took this product back past the 30 day deadline for returns, but also issued me a prepaid UPS label to return the old stuff and paid for the shipping on the new stuff. They were incredibly apologetic for making the wrong recommendation, and have gone over the top to make things right. The new RAM came in today. Two days after I instigated this process. I'm a happy camper.
bigwater
Well it's been over a week now since I took out the three TWX4G1333C9A G kits and installed one HX3X12G1333C9 G kit, and everything has ran perfect since then. Thanks to all who worked to show me the error of my ways.
