Best Configuration for 2x F80 in Raid 0

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have just ordered a new PC. I intend to install W7 Ultimate on 2 F80 in Raid 0 for apps and games, and store all the data on WD green 1,5 TB 5200 RPM.

I have read some thread here and there and I am writing this because there some things I'd like to be sure of before my PC arrives.

If I got it correctly, Trim is not supported in a Raid 0 configuration. I also know that F80s have 12 GB reserved for wear levelling BESIDES the 84 GB of usable space.

- Should I still over provision my hard drives to enhance performance and keep it high in the long run?

- If so, what percentage would you suggest between used and free space, considering the kind of rig I have?

- What should stripe size be? 128 KB?

Also I have a Rampage III Gene, but did not buy any external controller. Will this limit my configuration too much?

Thank you in advance for your time, and hope this thread can help others with my very same set-up too.

No just partition and format the drives normally there is no need to reserve space. The controller will do that automatically. And the Rampage III Gene should be S-ATA II compatible so they should be no problems or loss in performance. However, every MB is different and the actual performance may very in a RAID configuration.

well I'm planning to get another F60 too, and I just wonder TRIM is really that important? and there will be TRIM support for raid0 in the future if there is no?

the capacity exactly 59.914 KB probably your F80 should be about 79.920 KB, if there will be 12GB for something, get F60 -.-

At this time TRIM is not supported in RAID I cannot tell you when it may be available I would suggest talking to the controller manufacturer you are using for more information.

And I would consider using two F40 drives in RAID for best performance and cost ratio.

Thank you. So, there is basically no need for over-provisioning?

I have read somewhere that SSDs had to be partitioned 50% storage-50% free, if one is not to experience appalling perfomance drops. If this is not necessary for two F80s that is amazing!

I also plan on buying Diskeeper Pro, which they tell me automatically recognizes SSDs and manages them accordingly. Is that a good choice?

P.S. btw, PC is due to arrive today...
