CMT6GX3M3A1600C7 seems to be malfunctioning (BSOD + timings change after restart)

Dear Corsair support and forum members,

Wondering if anyone can help me with my corsair ram problem, or if there even is a problem. I've been a Corsair fan for years, always built my computers with Corsair ram. I love it for it's stability and performance.

But few days ago i bought my new computer, as usual with Corsair ram (6Gb CMT6GX3M3A1600C7) and im having a bit of an issue. Basically when i put the system together i ran it on stock settings for a day or two and everything was fine. Then i went into BIOS and enabled CPU Turbo Mode and XMP so i can run my Corsair at it's 1600Mhz and 7-7-7-20 designated timings. System boots no problem and works fine, but sometimes i suddenly get Blue Screen Of Death and my PC restarts. After restart, i go into CPU-Z and CAS changes from 7.0 to 8.0 so at 1600Mhz it looks like this 8.0-7-7-20 . If i reboot the system again after this, the timings go back to normal 7.0-7-7-20. I suspect there might be a problem with the ram not being able to run 7-7-7-20 @ 1600Mhz consistently.

Another thing worthy of mentioning is the fact that when im in BIOS and XMP is enabled my ram voltage is showing between 1.6Xv and 1.66v and as far as i know it should be 1.65v at those timings.

Ok, last night i ran a few cycles of Memtest (approx 3 hours) - no errors found. Then updated bios on my Rampage III Extreme to 1005 and ran Memtest again for another 3 hours - no errors again!

Then started playing GTA IV, and it BSOD'ed again about an hour into the game! But this time after restart the timings still remained 7-7-7-20. Mind you, i always monitor all the temperatures and nothing is overheating. Could it just be the game? or drivers? If so, why did it reset my CAS to 8.0 before?

Have you tested stability with software like prime95.

Doing that could rule out the Game.

Some ram ram experts recommends setting the voltages and timing manually.

If you must start from some basic settings, I'd recommend turning off XMP profiles and setting voltages and timings manually.

From the links just sort out the info that you need.

  • 8 months later...

BSOD is still happening with XMP enabled. Apparently it's a crappy memory controller on i7 950, and BSOD error 124 usually means not enough voltage for memory controller. Im going to try to set all the settings manually. Can anyone tell me what the voltages and other settings should be to run 1600 with 7-7-7-20 timings?

Thanks!

DO NOT Enable CPU Turbo mode!

Please go to BIOS setup and load setup defaults and then enable XMP Profile one and then check what its setting the CPU/QPI Voltage to with that CPU it should not be more than 1.45 Volts, and the first generation of this module would set the QPI to 1.6 Volts which is more than your CPU can handel.

Thanks for quick reply! Just want to clarify a few points.

Does this mean i can never run turbo mode? Can i run turbo mode if i set all the voltages manually? Is 1.65v ok for DRAM bus voltage, and what are the other settings, ei:

CPU Voltage ?

CPU PLL Voltage ?

QPI/DRAM Core Voltage 1.45v

DRAM Bus Voltage 1.65v

Im still not entirely sure how to run my RAM 1600 with 7-7-7-20 timings without BSOD. What's the reason behind disabling Turbo Mode?

Thanks!

Turbo mode is a MB manufacturer defined performance setting and for testing or if the system is not stable you should disable it. But if the system is stable with out it enabled its kinda common sense you will have to leave it disabled.

And you would have to ask Intel for the CPU Voltages we do not specify these settings.
