Report Your Success or Failure - X-Series Firmware Update

That reference to Trim in CrystalDiskInfo just indicates that the drive supports Trim NOT that it is enabled!

You will need to have ver 2.0 firmware installed to have it enabled.

I know...

But if you compare with other Crystal Info Screenshots from another brands, before they had TRIM enabled firmwares, it has TRIM grayed.

Here are my results with a Gigabyte P55A-UD4P motherboard.

Tried first using a bootable thumb drive. Failed. About half the time the thumb drive was not booting properly (kept telling me that there was no COMMAND.COM file) so I switched to a floppy bootdisk from the link that Ramguy posted. Floppy drive is an external USB model. USB-FDD is one of the bootup options in the BIOS, and it seemed to work OK with that.

My motherboard has six SATA2 and two SATA3 ports. I disconnected all other drives and tried the X128 in each port in turn, powering down between attempts. Each time, the lower128.exe utility could see the drive. Each time I got the fail-bye result.

I note that some people have reported success after apparent failures - alas Crystaldiskinfo continues to report firmware 1.0.

Well (a) at least we were warned, and (b) at least the drive still works.

I also note that some people have reported success after hot-swapping. I might try that tomorrow.

@Stewart1: Do you have set AHCI or IDE mode on the SATA port? I have a similar motherboard from ASUS, I moved the SSD from the SATA3 to the SATA2 port and had to change from AHCI to IDE mode (I used extended IDE mode).

I could flash than succesfully at the first attempt.

SUCCESS!

1st attempt failed.

2nd attempt worked: Had to switch the connection from the SATA port 0 to SATA port 1 of my motherboard.

Thanks Corsair!

The test results below were made on a X128 SSD 2.0 firmware (running with the settings of this sticky thread: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=82516) on a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 mobo.

Unit Allocation size = 4096 bytes.

260mb/s read

190mb/s write

Success - eventually

Asus P5E WS Pro

I used floppy as this MB does not seem to support booting from USB (had to remove non essential DOS utilities from WIN98SE floppy to make space for firmware flash)

Changed boot order in BIOS and SATA mode from RAID to IDE.

Initial attempt made without opening the PC leaving everything connected.

Booted, SSD found, download failed.

Opened PC, disconnected all other drives (3). Tried again. download failed again.

Followed advice on this thread and hot swapped SATA to next port down (0 to 1). Ran lower128.exe again. This time it took a lot longer to find the SSD (almost instant before). Eureka - download successful.

From my perspective the key to success was making the firmware utility hunt for the SSD. It is almost as though it knew where it was first time after boot but then failed. Once it had to really hunt for it it was happy!

To conclude. Changed BIOS settings back and rebooted. Windows 7 (64 bit) found new hardware and asked for a further reboot. CrystalDiskInfo reports Firmware 2.0 and like other postings, health has dropped from 100% to 92%.

For the record, I did not erase SSD before this procedure and do not seem to have lost any data.

Many thanks Corsair for giving us the chance to experiment. Hopefully the true life experiences of forum users will help you nail down the random failures and come up with a more foolproof utility quicker than if you had kept your testing in the lab? This success has certainly made my weekend! All I need now is for Scotland to win the Rugby in Italy this afternoon and I'll rush out and buy a lottery ticket whilst my luck is in!

Well after my last attempt I thought I would try again.

Only difference this time was that I

1. Moved to a different SATA port

2. Turned off BUS Mastering (on same screen as ACHI options in my Abit IP35Pro bios screen)

Bingo..

Success ;-)

Only down side is that my HDTune results have dropped from 220 to 180 ;-(.. Maybe I need a clean start? or does this upgrade reduce speed?

I tried in a rampage II gene and failed. What steps did u take?

First, set to IDE and compatibile mode, trying hdderase, everythings ok, not frozen, blah blah, than, after all i see options, "1" for start erasing, click and thats the end, can't set password... in hdparm same thing, everythings fine until password set fails... i tried all versions of hdparm, on cent os on mandriva, on everything, and always same thing, password problem. Without password: NULL, yeah, same problem, password, input output error :sigh!: If you mean steps for updatig firmware, disconect all sata cables and connect SSD to port 1 or 2, thats all:)

Gigabyte P55A-UD4P MB.

SATA ports set to IDE in BIOS

1. Tried in all 6 SATA ports and both SATA3 ports, rebooting between tries: FAIL-BYE

2. Tried with all other drives disconnected, hot-swapping at command prompt: FAIL-BYE

3. Tried hot-swapping at command prompt, then disconnecting power and data from drive for 3-5 minutes: FAIL-BYE

4. Tried switching from "native IDE" to "legacy IDE" in BIOS, then as for 3 above: FAIL-BYE

5. Tried hot-swapping at the point where the utility had found the drive and was asking me to enter a number (getting desperate): FAIL-BYE

At this stage I am out of ideas. Will lurk here for a while to see if anyone comes up with a new trick. Otherwise it is an RMA :(:

Good job on releasing the update, ppl!

Q1. I am curious to know if anyone has a statistic for success Vs failure in applying the FW update?

Q2. Has anyone tried applying the update using a Gigabyte EX58 UD3R 1366 M/B?

Thanks

I have a gigabyte X58A-UD3R and failed in all ways.

Installed on my first try

Went to IDE mode

Left it overclocked

All drives attached

Crossed fingers

So how do we tell if its working?

CrystalDiskInfo has shown the X-128 health status as 99% since the update.

Is that a expected number or should it be 100%

Registered to comment. Had a success with my X64. Read right through this thread and kept all the tips in mind.

Disconnected all drives except the X64.

Turned off AHCI, set to IDE compatible mode

Turned off HT on the i7, and set to only one core active (to be on the safe side)

Hot plugged the X64 (without disconnecting its power) around on different SATA channels, tried a minimum of three attempts of the update prog per cable, and got lucky with the third cable on the second attempt running updater. (edit: no reboots)

Ran secure erase, reinstalled Win7, and happy as a pig in **** :p

I’ve been watching this whole debacle for a couple of months, and getting a little depressed about it all. Planned on never buying another Corsair product ever again. Kudos for giving your customers the opportunity, Corsair. If it hadn’t worked I still would have been satisfied, as Corsair has shown some commitment to their community here. Consider me an ongoing, satisfied customer. Well done.

Why would this matter?

Corsair has shown some commitment to their community here.

Yes, I agree. Disappointed as I am that I cannot yet get it to work, I think Corsair have done the right thing under the circumstances.
