TX750W and PC shutdown in 3D games

My PC powers off [no BSOD,no freezes; as if I pulledout the power plug] during "intense scenes" in 3D games.

I've had this problem the first time when playing Crysis an year ago [my rig is ~ 2 years old now] but I ignored it as it happened only a couple of times and all other games ran fine back then . I've had these again with Crysis Warhead ,but I ignored it as it happened only 2 or 3 times before I finished the game.

I havent played for a while on the PC ,and when I finally got back to gaming on my PC now with CODMW2, the problem returned and this time the shutdowns happen very frequently [during heavy firefights] and the longest amount of time that I could game without a shutdown was 1hr30mins. Same problem when I tried playing DragonAge,ResidentEvil5,SeriousSam HD,FEAR2. Sometimes the shutdowns occur as quickly as 5 mins into a game and they dont always shutdown at the same place ingame.

This started my frustrating sidequest of troubleshooting this issue. At first ,I felt that it was an overheating issue with my 8800GTX/Motherboard/CPU , but after some stress-tests with OCCT, I ruled it out [ the temps for the Motherboard-CPU-GTX went into 51-60-109c without errors/shutdown]. Also when I checked the temps with Everest during gaming ,I noticed that the shutdowns occur even at low temps. I ruled out the RAM since this happens only in certain 3D games and the other 3D apps which I spend most of my time on [3dsmax,mudbox etc] never caused a problem. I began to suspect my PSU after reading about several similar problems and those cases almost always involved a faulty PSU. The fact that my 12v always toggles between 11.64 and 11.7 [in BIOS] and stays the same when idle/heavy load [constantly toggles between 11.65 and 11.71 in Everest/HWMonitor] worried me further[i learnt that these are within ATX specs, but I expected a safer, closer to 12.0 reading ]

Things I already tried :

- prime95,no errors

- OCCT tests, no shutdowns

- cleaning out the dust bunnies, didnt help

- replaced the CMOS battery ,reset BIOS to defaults, didnt help

- playing CODMW2 at 640x480,Min detail , runs well but its a horrible solution for my rig which can handle the game smoothly at max

- underclocking my GTX , can play a little longer[with lag!] ,but eventually shutsdown

- unplugging the DVD drive and my recently added 2nd HDD , can play a little longer but eventually shutsdown

- already have the latest drivers, tried going back to the 181 forceware drivers , didnt help

- brought down my room temp real low[17c] , can play longer ,but eventually shutsdown

- unplugging the case fan [which takes power from the Motherboard ], didnt help

- swapped the PCI-E cables since the TX750 has four[GTX needs 2], didnt help

- I'm on XP64bit,same problem in Vista64 which I dualboot to

Things I better mention :

- shutdowns occur ONLY with 3D games ,BUT there are some that never caused a shutdown [GRID,DIRT2,Mirror's Edge to name a few.these games heatup my PC,but never caused a shutdown sofar ]

- no overclocks

- I game at max detail mostly ,and never had a lockup/freeze/BSOD

- I take off the side panel of my case when gaming as it gets warm when gaming

- I use only 3GB of RAM of the 2 pairs of TWIN2X2048-6400 G that I bought. As my Motherboard cant handle all 4 modules [and I didnt want to risk a BIOS update ]

- The PSU ,along with my Viewsonic 22" monitor power plug are plugged into a surge protector, which is inturn plugged into an APC Back-UPS RS 1000

Any ideas on what could be wrong:sigh!: I'm really hoping that you guys could help me out with this !

Thanks for your time ,

hmm ,maybe .. but I dont face a reboot, just a plain shutdown [and only in games]

;and no entries in my event viewer log about the shutdown

the TX750W should be able to handle 2 8800GTXs, but mine appears to have a tough time handling one. but then ,I'm only guessing that its my psu and I hope someone would post a solution based on one of the several details I took the time to post .

I'll RMA if I get a reply suggesting that its most likely a faulty psu [ the low 12v worries me]

I am pretty sure that the 8800GTX has a threshold of 120C; the 109C was from OCCT[didnt cause a shutdown ];

besides, the shutdowns happened at as low as 70C when gaming ,and never seemed to be related to temps [99C was the max temp in games, specifically DIRT2,which never caused a shutdown !]

any other possibilities?

OCCT uses Furmark (OpenGL), which maxes out your temps but does not actually max out your card. You can be Furmark stable but crash 3Dmarks for example.

Something is dying in your system, and the obvious answer is your video card. I have never heard a card sustain such high temperatures for so long without dying prematurely.

Thanks MJinZ; I just installed and ran 3DMark06 twice[room temp at 17c], it ran without shutdowns and my score was 12006

About the temps , the country I live in is kinda warm ,and my friend who has an 8800GT has similar temps in his rig [both of our cards are over 2 years old now]

I wish I knew what exactly is dying:sigh!:
