Corsair SSD X32 = really poor performance

Recommended Posts

Oh great, I already did a full format. I guess for me quick format (32k) is bootless for me now?

Do you have any suggestions for me?

So what I'm supposed to do now with my full formatted P256, HDD Erase? How serious is the drop in drives performance with full format? Please help

just confirming...

if one did a full format at the initial install, it is still possible to recover the performance by doing a secure erase? Or, is all hope lost?

I tried doing a search with no luck on the topic.

What is it about doing a full format that kills the drive? What's so different about the drive when it comes from the factory?

Test the drives performance with ATTO and post the results and if the drive is not performing properly then I would suggest the steps I posted previously.

Doing a full format will put data in all of the blocks and cause the file copy to do a read then write to clear the Block/Cluster then a write to put the data in the Block/cluster. With SSD the Block/cluster has to clear before new data will be written but with a normal HDD any data in the block/cluster can just be over written. There is maybe a bit more to it but that is the just of it.

And HDD Erase or How to Restore Corsair SSD performance WITHOUT using HDDErase will help restore the drive performance.

Makes sense. Though, it's quite impressive how fast these things format even if you do a full format.

Actually, i just wiped the drive with a vista DVD i grabbed from my MSDN library. Did a diskpart with 32k clusters, quick format with NTFS after. Rebooted and installed xp without formatting.

I ran ATTO before blasting it and got around reading 130MB/s, with writes suffering. I still thought the system ran amazingly fast, but I just wasn't seeing the performance some people were seeing.

I just finished installing all the drivers and ran ATTO again. Reads are pegged at 130, writes being consistent once the reads are pegged. Any thoughts?

What system are you running these tests one? Or what controller is it using? The results look to be on an SATA1 controller?

That's correct. It's on a ICH7 controller i believe, running on a mac mini. I believe SATAI specs to 180 or so MB/s. Considering my results somewhat matched with the guys on the lower end, I assumed my full format may have lost a small bit of performance. However, I also fully understand that even if specs say 180, the performance may very well be less.

I was at least expecting 150 though. But i'm afraid that 130 is the brick wall for this controller.

I'm also getting rubbish figures from my X32 SSD:-

I'll have some time over the next few days, and I'm trying to work out a plan of attack, I think it's worth trying a replacement SATA cable, I'm also able to bring the drive up as a second drive in my system then test again.

The question I have is regarding the imaging of my system, based on what's been said on here if you use HDD erase to get the drive back to it's 'best' state when you restore the image with a sector based imaging tool such as RDeploy won't this put it back to exactly how it was? Should I use imagex to to the imaging instead?

thanks,

LT.

I would suggest using Acronis to make and image of the drive (if you are using Windows) then use Parted magic to Wipe the drive under tools select Erase Disk and Secure Erase and then, install the drive on the system you will be using it as a second HDD and format it with the QUICK Option Only and 4096 Allocation then test it with Atto again to be sure its running properly then delete the partition and image the drive back to its original image and you are done.

Thanks RAM GUY, what a difference, after several hours yesterday I finally got the X32 performing much better.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5 which has both an AMD RAID and Gigabyte RAID controller on board. Previously I had a 4 x 1TB RAID 0 array on the AMD and my X32 on the Gigabyte running in AHCI mode. After some trial and error I determined the best place for the SSD was on the 5th port of the AMD controller, I then proceeded with the secure wipe & quick format and then re-installed Win7 and saw good figures from ATTO. So I decided to give my original image, I used ghost in the end, a try and here are the results:-

And as an added bonus, now that I'm not using the Gigabyte controller and have disabled it, I've fixed the BSOD after sleep problem I was having too.

thanks again,

LT.

1. Crystal whateveritscalled reports crap speeds from my X32, Atto gives me pretty much your benchmarks, Ramguy.

2. Cheryl Cole? man, she looks really ****ty in that pic :D:

Definitely one of my top 3 most amazing women in the world right now.
