khogan
Recently my voyager 16 gb usb drive broke, the plug end was bent and it would intermittently connect and disconnect. I was lucky enough to get all the data off. Shortly after the transfer, the drive would not connect and I would guess the connection between circuit board/ memory and plug end was totally severed. Anyways, there was some personal info on that drive that is most likely still there. At least in some easily recoverable nature. I started the return process and now have an rma #, and I am pondering what to do, return it or not. Maybe there is a little paranoid nature there. I searched and saw some folks talking about refurbished drives from a site (directdeals.net?) or repackaged drives not matching up in what was advertised. So it sounds like they resell drives Hopefully there isn’t an explanation about this in the f.a.q. as I looked there, but saw nothing. I bet that could be a good place for such an answer. I would like to know if there is an official statement of what happens to these drives. Repaired and returned to user (wishful thinking)? Or repaired and resold? Any ideas out there? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2009 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 2, 2009 Let's get it replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Be sure to check the box that says “I've already spoken to Technical Support and/or RAM Guy.” We can replace the drive for you, however we do not offer any type of data recovery software or services. If the data is important then you may want to review the article here: http://www.corsair.com/_appnotes/AN803_CommonIssues_HelpfulTips_DLoss_DCorruption.pdf. for some data recovery advise. You may also want to check out websites such as http://www.download.com and http://www.softpedia.com and search for "USB Data Recovery," to see if you can find some freeware/shareware that may help you recover the data. If all else fails then you may need to contact a local data recovery service center to find out if the data is recoverable.
khogan
thx ram guy. I have started the rma process (printed the rma # too) and was able to get my data off and saved on another drive. I am looking to find out what corsair will do with my old drive if I return it. Will it be refurbished? Maybe returned to me? Is there a reformat and test write to the drives before resell? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 5, 2009 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 5, 2009 They will normally be dissembled or sometimes they are destroyed depending on what is wrong with them. And we will normally replace the failing USB Drives with new drives.
