New x256 SSD drive disappears

Hi Ram Guy ... sad but I'm back again, I've received the replacement drive...this time it went straight into a brand new laptop, full-formatted the drive from scratch before installing brand new Windows 7 x64, took other SSD-preservation steps such as disabling hibernate, turning off pagefiles, TRIM, etc...then I installed my usual apps like Office etc... not even 2 weeks of normal usage later, this morning the HDD light on the laptop just stayed on (no blinking), then it went off, and this is quickly followed by a windows BSOD .. when windows restarts itself after the BSOD, bios asks me to insert system drive (ie: SSD not detected)... I power-cycle the laptop (power+battery out, then in again after a while)... SSD is detected again, and boots into windows, about a minute after working, HDD light stays on again for a minute, then off, and BSOD again... and the cycle repeats...

So first thing's first I've recovered my last 2 weeks worth of work out of the SSD using a portable USB case (as per my post above)... now I'm too scared to do anything on this SSD... could you send me some instructions on PartedMagic so I can tryyyy and recover it on my own? otherwise it'll have to be another RMA :(

Hi Wired, I found the sticky.. I think I'm just confused with the point about Parted Magic in that, a secure erase "brings the drive back" so it's usable again - but then I'll still lose whatever data's on it right?.. whereas in my mind I was looking for a way to "bring the drive back" whilst retaining the data....

if that's the case, in hindsight it wouldn't have helped me when I RMA'ed my first drive because I *realllyyy* needed my data back (it held commercial value and there was sensitive company data on it)... whereas this time it's only 2 weeks worth of work, and I've managed to recover that already so I don't care as much if I lose the data now....

Purchased new CMFSSD-256D1 (X256) from frys.com during September 2010. About a week prior, had purchased a CMFSS D-256GBG2D (P256) from frys. Both purchases have rebate offers, which I've mailed to Corsair and are being processed. The X256 came with firmware version 2.1 and the P256 with VBM19C1Q.

Used Active Kill Disk free edition to zero out both SSD's before OS cloning.

Initially installed P256 into Dell Laptop XPS 1640 running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, after cloning existing OS hard drive to the P256 using Acronis True Image Home 2011 Plus Pack. No post install problems whatsoever and experienced significant speed improvements with the P256 over old 7200 hard drive.

Then the X256 arrived. Decided I would install X256 to above Dell and move the P256 to a Dell XPS M1530 laptop I have. The 1530 is running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Cloned the P256 to the X256 and initially no problems with the X256. Shut down the 1640, unplugged power cord, and didn't power on until next day. This is when first failure occurred. During post, X256 was not recognized. Had to power the 1640 off and on twice before it recognized the X256 and successfully booted. During successive reboots that day and with no power down, had no boot problems. Unplugged for the day and same boot problem occurred the following day. As a matter of course, I power down and unplug both laptops when not in use, a practice I will continue to follow.

Installed the P256 into the Dell 1530 after disk clone of that laptop's 7200 drive onto the P256. Again, no problems after clone or when the laptop was powered down / unplugged after use. The P256 has booted and worked flawlessly in both laptops.

Moved the P256 back to the Dell 1640 and the X256 to the Dell 1530 after another round of zeroing and cloning.

Same flaky boot problem occurs with the X256 in the 1530 after laptop has been powered down and unplugged overnight. Must power 1530 off and on at least a couple of times before X256 is finally recognized as installed drive. I do not have additional drives installed or externally attached to either laptop.

So is it possibly a defective X256 disk, problematic firmware, or a combination of the two? Based on Corsair forum posts, X256 disk replacement with another X256 doesn't always appear to be a lasting remedy, with the same boot problems often reoccurring with the new disk and despite the latest firmware, which my X256 already has.

Even though the X256 cost me about 60 dollars more, given what appear to be its chronic problems experienced by a lot of customers, I would rather have a P256 for replacement, based on my experiences so far, than another X256. Despite some research of the X256 prior to buying it and seeing it might prove to be a lemon, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and not so wisely purchased it anyway for its better speed and the offered rebate. University of Hard Knocks strikes again.

Is Corsair planning a soon to be released, cure all firmware update to the X256? Could hold out for that, or can I RMA the X256, based on the boot problems I've experienced, and receive a P256 replacement? Thanks for any feedback.

I am having the exact same problems as the above user (madmarty1) with my Corsair x256 in my Lenovo X200 tablet. I also have the same question: Is there a firmware upgrade available that fixes the problems, or a way I can receive a P256 replacement?

I wish I had seen this thread before I bought the drive.:-(
