Flash Voyager 16GB suddenly recognizing as Removable Disk with no media

I have a 16GB Flash Voyager that I've had for a few months now and I haven't had a problem with it until yesterday. I attempted to just create a new folder on it, and it suddenly said the folder was 56GB in size and was filled with files loaded with strange character names. I unplugged it, and plugged it back in and it still was acting up. I then plugged it into a different computer with XP Pro and formatted it. Plugged it back into the original computer and it recognized fine. I copied a couple of files to it, verified they were there, then took it home. On my system (running Vista 64) it showed up as a Removable Device with no media, just like my memory stick reader when I don't have anything plugged in to it. I have tried it on 3 different computers and get the exact same thing every time, it shows up as a Removable Device with no data on it, tells you to insert media when you click on it or try to format it, and the read light on the thumb drive doesn't ever light up now. I have another thumb drive that works perfectly fine on all of the same systems and the windows operating systems vary between each from Vista 64 to XP Pro to XP Home. I tried the sdfv2000.exe that I saw linked in another thread and it doesn't list it as an option to format. It shows up in the device manager like it should, but with no information on the partition. And any time I try to create a partition, I get the "Insert Disk" prompt. Did it just die on me completely? Not concerned with any data on it, just would like it functional again is all. Thanks.

That is not uncommon, did you format the drive with the SD-CARD Organization. format utility and then run HD-Bench software to test the performance. If this does not work or solve the issue just have it replaced.

Let's get it replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Be sure to check the box that says “I've already spoken to Technical Support and/or RAM Guy.”

I have a very similar thing happen to me. I will use the same form to report my problem. I didn't have all the other stuff happen. It just suddenly started to shows up as a Removable Device with no data on it, tells you to insert media when you click on it or try to format it, and the read light on the thumb drive doesn't ever light up now.

Same issue has happened to me as well.

16 gig Flash Voyager. All my information , very sensitive information is inaccessable. Now, i need to have this replaced. but do i have to send in the drive in order to do this?

Is this drive dead? Is there any way of getting it to work.

Would i recieve a sealed new thumb drive?

thanks

We can replace the drive for you, however we do not offer any type of data recovery software or services. If the data is important then you may want to review the article here: http://www.corsair.com/_appnotes/AN803_CommonIssues_HelpfulTips_DLoss_DCorruption.pdf. for some data recovery advise. You may also want to check out websites such as http://www.download.com and http://www.softpedia.com and search for "USB Data Recovery," to see if you can find some freeware/shareware that may help you recover the data. If all else fails then you may need to contact a local data recovery service center to find out if the data is recoverable.

I had this same issue:

Corsair 16GB Voyager Flash Drive

Started being detected as "Removable Drive"

Device manager saw it as USBest USB2FlashStorage

If you double clicked the Drive it brought up a "Insert Disk" dialog

If you try to format it it gave an error "Cannot open volume for direct access"

SDCard.org Flash format Utility does not show any attached devices.

I fixed it by downloading:

USBest UT165 rescue v1.0.3.1 from http://www.flashboot.ru

and

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8 (google search it.)

The rescue utility rewrote the firmware, I rebooted, then formatted the flash drive using the HP storage format Tool.

The cause of my failure was tied to my flash drive being NTFS and not using safe removal. This somehow corrupted the firmware on the device.

I hope this post helps others like me. My device was under warranty but I hate shipping stuff.

This is my first post in this forum.

A heartfelt thank you for the information contained in this thread. I have three 16GB Flash Voyagers all of which through time have ended up with the dreaded RAW error. This came about by me loaning them to friends or family.

After having twice bought online software "guaranteed" to sort this problem ( They never did) I came across this forum, I now know I should have checked here first.

I now have three fully functioning Voyagers again.

Thanks for the info contained here , I will of course pass the info on to all my friends so they can enjoy the benefits of your knowledge

Okay! I plugged my 32gb Flash Voyager into my tower and it shows up as a removal drive, every time I attempt to access the drive it says please insert disk and the blue light just blinks. When I attempt to format the flash drive I get please insert disk, I'm very puzzled because the drive worked fine last night. I've tried everything to get this thing to work with no luck!
