VX450 fan swapped out and not spinning

I have taken out stock ADDA fan on my VX450. I found it was too loud at idle (around 21 dBa which is pretty quiet but still easy to hear in my system).

The new fan I put in does not spin at ~4v (the starting voltage of the VX450 fan controller). If I put my hand on the PSU case, it is starting to feel very warm now that it has been on for a while. The fan I put in only needs about 5v to start spinning.

So will the PSU heat up with the fan off but eventually turn the fan on? Or is it bad for the PSU for the fan to be off at all (even with very low loads on the PSU)?

Yes I know that. I did see the "warranty void if removed" sticker since I had to scrape it off to get into the PSU.

BTW I wanted to add the fan is wired up properly. If I spin the fan with my fingers then the ~4v of the VX450 fan controller is enough to keep it spinning. So I've turned the PSU into a semi fanless one. I'm not sure if it's ok for the PSU. Hence, would it bad for the PSU for the fan to be off at all (even with very low loads on the PSU)?

This is beyond the scope of our testing on the PSU. The PSU was designed with a specific fan controller profile and fan to meet the cooling needs of this PSU. So, I'd say yes, it's bad for the fan to be totally off if the original fan would have been running under the same circumstances.

Ok, to be on the safe side I've got the fan spinning even with the lowest loads. The air comming out the back is still pretty warm so I think it is good idea to have the fan running all the time. It's now so quiet that it's getting really difficult to hear any noise at all!!

For what it's worth, I think the VX450 is a very decent PSU. I even recomended it to people so at least 3 VX450s have been bought because of me. But the stock ADDA fan is very poor. It really shouldn't be used in any PSU that is trying to be really quiet. I think most of the noise is bearing noise. I rate the PSU 9/10 but the stock fan 2/10.
